1987–89: River Oaks Is Successfully Established
1987: Company is founded by Stephen L. Simons and five other investors.
In March 1988, the company's investors established R-O Realty, Inc., another Mississippi corporation.
1990–95: Period of Rapid Growth in Sales Brings River Oaks National Recognition
That, with reasonably good market conditions, boosted its revenue from $46.2 million in 1992 to $70.1 million, a 52 percent increase.
1993: River Oaks goes public; trustees of the Ansin Foundation file complaint against the company and two officers in United States District Court.
Originally River Oaks was developed as a bedroom community since the location was so close to Carswell Air Force Base, which was designated as a Joint Reserve Base in 1994 to be shared by the Navy, Marines, Air Force and Texas National Guard.
Because of its previous performance, River Oaks put its projected sales for 1994 in the $88 million to $90 million range.
In actuality, it revenues rose to $107.8 million, netting the company a $4.5 million profit. It was the company's best year, and one that seemed to justify the expanding steps it had taken, including its 1994 purchase of Gaines Furniture Manufacturing, Inc., located in McKenzie, Tennessee, and the opening of a plant in Compton, California.

In 1997, its third-quarter net loss reached $3.9 million, compelling the company to take some drastic steps to stem the flow.
Dieterich took the view that the "old company" was made "history" as of April 1, 1998, when the interim executives began River Oaks' emergence from its Chapter 11 ashes.
In 1998, South Norfolk Baptist negotiated and subsequently purchased 11.5 acres of prime real estate on Great Bridge Boulevard.
1998: Simons resigns as CEO; company files voluntary petition under Chapter 11 and retains OSNOS & Company to assist its restructuring as a private entity with the same name.
River Oak held its first worship service on January 23, 1999, at Oscar F. Smith High School under the leadership of Pastor Dennis Culbreth.
