As a child in the 1930’s, Bob Johnson reminisced on his Boy Scout memories of camping in the area known as River Bend.
In 1957, the YWCA of Racine wished to expand its programs beyond the confinement of the building downtown, with an emphasis on understanding and enjoying the outdoors.
In 1959, J. Lester Johnson purchased the first 30.8 acres of River Bend for $27,500.
By 1960, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development had declared the area a slum.
In 1962, five additional acres were purchased, giving better access to North Green Bay Road.
Then in 1963, the picnic shelter/pavilion was constructed with a donation from the John Hammes Foundation.
Up until 1972, day camping at River Bend was the primary use of the property.
In the 1980’s wildlife rehabilitation work was taking place at River Bend.
-Graves made his first site visit in November of 1982.
-Michael Graves, a graduate of the University of Cincinnati`s Architecture program, was asked to design the Riverbend Music Center in January of 1983.
-The CSO Board of Trustees authorized the beginning of the design phase for the new pavilion on January 13, 1983.
-Riverbend officially opened in 1984.
Since 1986, when the River Bend Neighborhood Association was formed and started to drive out drug dealers and prostitutes, there has been a grassroots effort to revive the neighborhood to its past prominence.
In the spring of 1991, a new environmental education program came to River Bend, and that program was known as the Earthkeepers program.
In early 2000, the Naturalist in Residence program was developed along similar lines to an Artist in Residence program.
Around 2004, the SWIM’R program was developed.
Construction began in the fall of 2007 on a new Pavilion at Riverbend, named the National City Pavilion at Riverbend.
That program was transferred in 2007 to the new REC center in downtown Racine in partnership with UW Parkside.
In 2007, the new EM’s cabin was completed with the support of the SE Wisconsin community in the ongoing, “Invest in a Natural Asset” program.
The Pavilion opened at the end of May, 2008.
In late 2008, PNC bought National City Bank.
In 2008, North Central Health Services (NCHS) conducted a community health needs assessment (CHNA). The CHNA provided the information NCHS needed to support the community gaps and needs of our region.
As a result, National City Pavilion was renamed PNC Pavilion in 2009.
Barnum said when she moved to River Bend in 2009 she knew very little about historic preservation.
In 2012, four sections of the neighborhood were classified as a local historic district.
When Chris and Sarah Chiaramonte bought their three-story Victorian home in 2015, they had no idea it was a part of a historic district.
In 2016, River Bend resident John Wise replaced a broken vinyl window with a new vinyl window.
