Riverview Medical Center company history timeline

1904

In 1904 the province purchased 405 hectares for the construction of the hospital and the neighbouring Colony Farm in a natural setting.

1909

On May 10, 1909, Hamilton County’s first hospital opened for business.

1911

The facility was founded in 1911 by the City of Winnipeg as the Winnipeg Municipal Hospital.

1913

By 1913 the first permanent ward, the Male Chronic Building, opened its doors.

1914

In 1914, Harrell Hospital and Sanatorium was sold to Hamilton County and renamed Hamilton County Hospital.

1922

In 1922 the Boys' Industrial School for juvenile delinquents opened on the site.

1924

Riverview Health Centre has maintained continuous accredited services since 1924.

In 1924 the Acute Psychopathic Unit opened.

1930

In 1930 the Female Chronic Building opened.

1934

In 1934 the Veterans' Block opened for "shell shock patients from the First World War.

1944

In 1944, to meet the health needs of a growing population, hospital trustees purchased land west of Noblesville from Mr.

1949

Construction of a new hospital began in 1949.

1950

Plans turned to action when, in 1950, the Princess Elizabeth Hospital opened as the first long term care facility in Canada.

1951

On May 12, 1951, the new hospital opened.

1952

Shortly thereafter, in 1952, the hospital was renamed Riverview Hospital as an homage to its location along the banks of the White River.

1983

In 1983, the first purpose-built day hospital was built.

1993

The facility became known as Riverview Health Centre in 1993, when it separated from the City of Winnipeg to be incorporated as a community hospital.

1995

Then, in 1995, construction began on a comprehensive renewal project, which entailed the demolition of the turn-of-the-century hospital buildings to make way for a new complex.

1998

In 1998 the government announced plans to close Riverview Hospital

2000

2000 the government announced a new 20-bed unit would be built at Riverview to house patients who are difficult to place in community residential treatment programs.

In 2000 the hospital and the government also came under fire for the continued use of electroshock therapy at the hospital, leading to the resignation of the president of the medical staff who fought the practice.

2005

Nine women later received settlements totalling $450,000 in 2005.

2014

In April 2014, Riverview Hospital was officially renamed Riverview Health and continues to serve the local community as a full-service, 156-bed hospital.

In 2014 the land the hospital sits on was included in a land claim by the Kwkikwetlem First Nation.
