Rivian company history timeline

2011

The company changed its name to Rivian in 2011.

2015

In 2015, Rivian opened research facilities in Michigan and the Bay Area.

2017

In January 2017, Rivian acquired the former Mitsubishi plant in Normal, IL, with the intention that the plant would become Rivian’s primary North American manufacturing location.

Until 2017, the company operated in stealth mode and didn’t become public until it purchased an old Mitsubishi factory in Normal, Illinois back in early 2017.

2018

In November 2018 Rivian revealed its first two products: an electric five-passenger pickup truck named the R1T™ and an electric seven-passenger SUV named the R1S™.

2019

Ford Motor Co. invested a half-billion dollars into Rivian in 2019 and said the companies would work jointly to develop electric vehicles.

2020

Tesla filed a lawsuit against Rivian in July 2020 alleging Rivian stole trade secrets and actively recruited former Tesla employees.

2021

2022

Despite facing losses in the first quarter of 2022, Rivian is expected to be successful.
