Roche Bros. Supermarkets company history timeline
Pat and Bud Roche opened their first Roche Brothers store in Roslindale, in 1952.
Roche and his brother, Pat, who died last year, founded Roche Bros. in 1952.
The company’s second store was opened in 1959, when Roche Bros. bought Crossman’s Market in Needham, on the corner of Chestnut Street and Great Plain Avenue.
In need of more space, Roche Bros. moved to its current building on Chestnut Street in 1965 and Harvey’s Hardware moved into the old location.
In 1966, Roche built the Chestnut Street supermarket in Needham and moved to town with his family.
In 1986, Roche’s 25-year-old daughter Patty, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and died one year later.
The company, now based in Wellesley, operates 18 stores in the greater Boston area and on the Cape, including a second Needham store – Sudbury Farms on Highland Avenue – which opened in 1990.
Roche, who never went to college, received an honorary degree from Stonehill College in 1995.
In 2014, Roche Bros. launched a new neighborhood market concept by the name of Brothers Marketplace.
In 2021, Roche Bros. will be launching a brand-new location in Watertown with more information coming soon!
