Rochester University company history timeline

1959

The college was founded by members of Churches of Christ in 1959.

In 1959 Pat Boone organized a rally which attracted well over 8000 guests and funds were raised for the college.

1961

In 1961 an additional science classroom was completed to create more learning space.

A 1961 decision to leave downtown Rochester for farmland in the suburban town of Henrietta put RIT on its path to pre-eminence as a global university.

Under Ellingson’s direction, the university began planning for the Henrietta campus in 1961.

1963

In 1963, the college achieved a major honor as it became a state accredited college.

RIT is chosen as the home campus for the federally sponsored National Technical Institute for the Deaf, which had been established in 1963 by Public Law 89-36 and signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

1965

In 1965 Muirhead center was completed.

1969

When Paul Miller began his term in 1969, the campus had just moved to Henrietta.

1978

The board dropped “Junior” from the institution’s name in 1978 as the college prepared for the addition of its first bachelor’s degree program.

1987

Koshiba was able to confirm Davis’s results—that the Sun produces neutrinos and that fewer neutrinos were found than had been expected (a deficit that became known as the solar neutrino problem). In 1987 Kamiokande also detected neutrinos from a supernova explosion outside the Milky Way.

1988

Rose helped launch RIT’s first Ph.D. program, in imaging science, in 1988.

1996

After building a larger, more sensitive detector named Super-Kamiokande, which became operational in 1996, Koshiba found strong evidence for what scientists had already suspected—that neutrinos, of which three types are known, change from one type into another in flight.

1997

The name was changed from Michigan Christian College to Rochester College in 1997.

2006

In the year 2006, the state authorized the institution to recommend teachers for certification.

2011

In 2011 women’s softball team captures the national title, and in the same year, the institution gets Michigan Board of Nursing approval for their nursing program.

2013

In 2013 John Tyson was named as the college’s current president, as the men’s’ basketball team wins the fifth national title.

2017

2017 – Present David C. Munson Jr. became RIT’s 10th president on July 1, 2017.
