Rochester Community and Technical College company history timeline

1915

On August 23, 1915, Doctor Charles Mayo made a motion at a meeting of the Rochester (MN) School Board to add two years of university work to the high school.

1917

Classes were held in what was called the “University Department” or the “Southern University.” In June 1917, Rochester Junior College (RJC) graduated its first 10 students at a joint commencement program with the high school.

1926

The RCTC Heintz Center is located at 1926 College View Road.

1944

The start of what was to become Rochester Area Vocational Technical Institute dates back to 1944 when adult vocational classes were first introduced as part of the Rochester Evening College.

1969

The original buildings located at the Heintz Center were completed in 1969.

When the technical college opened in 1969, it offered 15 program majors and enrolled 213 students.

1971

In 1971 a 14,000 square feet addition to the technical college doubled the size of the cafeteria, added four classrooms and a carpentry shop, and expanded the machine shop.

1986

A classroom building opened on the campus in the fall of 1986 to initially house the Rochester Center of Winona State University at a cost of $2.9 million.

1987

In 1987 Rochester Area Vocational Technical Institute (RAVTI) became Rochester Technical Institute.

A 70,000 square foot, two-story addition to the technical college was completed in 1987 and provided facilities to accommodate the move toward the restructured, credit-based delivery of instruction.

1988

The Plaza West building was renamed Memorial Hall in 1988.

1989

The campus further evolved in late 1989 with the completion of a $16 million construction project.

In 1989, Rochester Technical Institute was renamed Rochester Technical College.

1991

On July 1, 1991, Rochester Technical College merged with Austin Technical College and Faribault Technical College to form Joint Vocational Technical District 2501, also known as Minnesota Riverland Technical College.

1993

Construction was completed in 1993 on the $17 million expansion facilities, which houses student services areas, classrooms, computer and science labs, as well as a number of interactive television classrooms.

1996

Rochester Community and Technical College was established on July 1, 1996 when legislation required state community colleges and technical colleges co-located in the same city be merged into a consolidated college.

Minnesota Riverland Technical College-Rochester and Rochester Community College officially consolidated on July 1, 1996 to form Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC).

1997

The former Minnesota Riverland Technical College-Rochester Campus facility was dedicated as Heintz Center on May 9, 1997.

2002

Intercampus roads were also completed in 2002, connecting RCTC east buildings and RCTC west buildings (the Heintz Center), and included the first roundabouts in Minnesota.

2007

The University of Minnesota later relocated to its own downtown facility in the fall of 2007.

2018

In May 2018, the Minnesota Legislature approved a bonding bill that included $23 million for the Plaza-Memorial Hall project.

2021

Fall 2021 brought a new partnership and 70 new high school students to the RCTC campus through the PTECH-535 collaboration.
