Rockland Community College company history timeline

1959

Manley and Brucker submitted their final report to the Board of Supervisors in March 1959.

The college began in 1959 in the former county almshouse.

In the fall of 1959, Rockland Community College opened its doors to 139 students: 87 men and 52 women, 119 full-time and 20 part-time.

1960

Upon starting his term on February 1, 1960, Mosher immediately launched an expansion of facilities, the development of a larger library and three new science laboratories for use in the fall.118 But the physical plant was not the only area Mosher improved.

James Naismith, an actor and theatrical director hired in the 1960 spring semester, taught the first extension course, a speech class in the old Orange and Rockland Utilities building in Nyack.

1961

On June 11, 1961, the college's first commencement exercises honored 39 graduates—22 men, 17 women—who had finished the journey begun by 139 full-time students two years before.

Ray Rossiter was tapped to serve as acting director, an unofficial title he held for two years until Arnold Rist was appointed full-time director in 1961.

1962

Moseley eventually joined the full-time staff in 1962.

The year 1962 brought the departure of Frank Manley, an icon in the college’s founding.142 Manley accepted a job as president of Fitchburg Gas and Electric Light Co. in his native Massachusetts.

By 1962 the college was beginning to outgrow the Almshouse and its makeshift classrooms.

1963

“For me, the center of college life was the College Barn Players,” said Sanford Rubenstein, a 1963 graduate who became a Rockland legislator and an RCC trustee. “Not everyone was involved in the Players, but considering the total number of students, many, many of us were involved.” 134

The transition of which Palladino spoke gained its denouement with the retirement of Frank Mosher in 1963.

1986

2006

2006 – Grand opening of new Haverstraw Extension Center

2007

February 2007 – RCC Fighting Hawks Men's Bowling Team won their first Region XV Championship in school history.

2008

Rockland Community College became first New York Community College to Receive Information Assurance Course Validation from the Committee on National Security Systems during the June 2008 CNSS Awards Ceremony held at the 12th Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education.

SALUTE, established in 2008 is headquartered out of Colorado State University has over 90 chapters in colleges and universities across the country.

2008 – Theresa Morahan Simmons Center for Children and Families – Named in memory of Senator Thomas Morahan's daughter, a dedicated first-grade teacher who taught seven years at Richard P. Connor Elementary School in Suffern.

2009

Among events in the College's recent history are SUNY Rockland Community College Board of Trustees designated the building and grounds of Rockland Community College as a Smoke-Free Environment in September 2009.

In 2009, he and his racquetball partner won fourth place in the National Senior Olympics

2010

Famellette, a Marine Corps veteran and the longest serving faculty member at SUNY Rockland Community College, retired in 2010 after 50 years of teaching and coaching.

He was inducted into RCC's Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

In 2010, RCC celebrated its 50th Anniversary and continues to strive to meet the dreams of Lester Rounds and the other founders of the College.

2012

Dan Masterson of Pearl River, New York Poet Laureate, and longtime Professor of English who has been writing poems for 71 years and taught for 48 year at Rockland Community College, was appointed in 2012 as RCC's Poet-in-Residence.

2013

2013 - Haverstraw Extension Center doubled in size, growing an additional 9,000 square feet (800 m). On National Manufacturing Day (MFG) which fell on Friday, October 4, 2013, Rockland Community College introduced its new "clean tech" training center.

2014

On June 10, 2014, Andrew Cuomo, joined by New York State Police superintendent Joseph D'Amico, Rockland County Executive Ed Day and State University of New York chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher address the fight against the heroin epidemic in the State of New York.

In September 2014 a Doctorial Program in Executive Leadership (EdD), offered through St John Fisher College is the first doctoral program at SUNY Rockland
