Senior Software Architect (API Framework) - Plex
Software engineer job at Rockwell Automation
Rockwell Automation is a global technology leader focused on helping the world's manufacturers be more productive, sustainable, and agile. With more than 28,000 employees who make the world better every day, we know we have something special. Behind our customers - amazing companies that help feed the world, provide life-saving medicine on a global scale, and focus on clean water and green mobility - our people are energized problem solvers that take pride in how the work we do changes the world for the better.
We welcome all makers, forward thinkers, and problem solvers who are looking for a place to do their best work. And if that's you we would love to have you join us!
Position Overview:
We are looking for an experienced Senior Architect to guide the evolution of our API Framework, empowering teams to deliver high-SLA, scalable, and observable APIs. This is a hands-on role, not a whiteboard-only position-you'll write code, review implementations, and actively contribute to architectural solutions.
Sitting at the intersection of platform engineering and application architecture, you'll balance strategic leadership with practical execution. You'll design and implement reusable frameworks, guide development teams through complex decisions, and collaborate with platform and infrastructure teams across both on-prem and public cloud environments.
You will work remotely and report to the Manager, Software Engineering.
Your Responsibilities:
Design, implement, and evolve the internal API framework to support consistent, scalable, and secure API development across product teams
Define and champion best practices for API platform usage through reference architectures, engineering enablement, hands-on coding, and documentation
Collaborate with engineering and product leadership to define multi-quarter technical roadmaps aligned with organizational strategy
Lead technical design reviews and provide guidance on system architecture and interface design across services within the domain, while contributing directly to key implementations
Partner early in project planning with PMs and EMs to anticipate complexity and define technically sound solutions
Establish clear domain boundaries and service contracts to evolve out of a monolithic legacy architecture
Drive observability and reliability practices through OpenTelemetry, tracing, and service-level objectives
Ensure all designs and implementations meet enterprise security, performance, and compliance standards
Prototype new tooling or approaches to de-risk architectural changes and validate proposed frameworks, often taking first-pass ownership of early iterations
Actively align with other architects across application, platform, operations, and quality teams to ensure cohesive system architecture
Participate in cross-domain initiatives to identify and address technical debt and architecture misalignments at scale, including direct contributions to shared tooling and platform components
Strategic Roadmapping: Assess technical debt and forward-plan domain-level technical strategy with PMs/EMs
Solution Design & Implementation Leadership: Drive high-level architecture and system interface design across projects in your domain, while contributing working code and proof-of-concept implementations
Collaborative Planning: Partner early in the project lifecycle with PM/EM peers to define technical paths and anticipate complexity
Architecture Governance: Maintain reference architectures and architecture decision records (ADRs) for your domain
Cross-Domain Alignment: Proactively engage with other architects to ensure cohesive design across systems and reduce systemic tech debt
Security & Compliance: Uphold design quality by enforcing company standards around architecture, security, and performance
Business Insight: Identify system weaknesses and opportunities to guide business value and service improvements
Technical Flexibility: Comfortable working across cloud, virtualization, infrastructure automation, and application development domains, and stepping into hands-on roles.
The Essentials - You Will Have:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of relevant work experience.
Legal authorization to work in the U.S. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
The Preferred - You Might Also Have:
Typically requires 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and operating distributed backend systems or API platforms in production environments
Experience and hands-on proficiency in modern software development languages such as C# (.NET Core) or Go, with experience building RESTful or gRPC APIs
Experience with API management concepts, including:
authentication and authorization models (OAuth2, JWT, mTLS, API keys)
rate limiting, throttling, and quota enforcement
policy-based governance and versioned API publishing
Experience with API lifecycle management in enterprise API Management solutions (e.g., Apigee, Azure API Management, Kong, Istio Gateway)
Experience with cloud infrastructure (Microsoft Azure)
Experience with containerized workloads and CI/CD pipelines (Docker/Kubernetes)
Fluency in Infrastructure-as-Code and GitOps workflows, using Terraform, Flux, Helm, and Azure DevOps Pipelines for repeatable deployments
Hands-on experience with service mesh technologies (Istio, Linkerd, or Consul) - including routing rules, mTLS, ingress/egress configuration, and failover strategies
