First explored in 1805, the mouth of the Rocky River was envisioned as a site with a great future.
The story of our town begins in 1805 when Gideon Granger, a Connecticut landowner, first explored the area at the mouth of Rocky River.
He bought land that was west of Wagar Road, and bounded by Detroit Road on the south and Lake Erie on the north in 1810.
While Granger’s dream never came true, settlers started arriving and in 1819 the area was formally named Rockport Township.
Rufus Wright sold the tavern to Jacob Silverthorn in 1853.
Reuben Wood's property at Wagar and Avalon, in 1888.
By 1890, Beach's property stretched from Detroit Road to Lake Erie and from Bradstreet's Landing to the Oakwood estate owned by Daniel Eells.
Built in 1912, the tower was meant to be a gateway to the Beach Cliff neighborhood.
R. Guy Cowan, who is buried in Lakewood Park Cemetery, established the pottery in Rocky River in 1920, moving it from Lakewood.
The granite and marble mausoleum was built in 1921.
The theater opened in 1937 and closed 40 years later.
But like so many other things, Hahn's Crove fell victim to the Depression and by 1946 the property was sold.
