Basic Job Functions:
The Roll Mill Operator is responsible for safely operating and servicing the mill which maintains a quality section and required tonnage output, as well as operate NYS1 cranes and area mill equipment, such as the Reheat, BD1 & BD2, UR/E, and Sample Inspection. The Operator must understand mill set up, pass schedules, product tracking, cut sheets, control rolling, and product quality in order to fulfill customer order specification. They will also assist in all activities on the crew such as product changes at all mills, housekeeping, and down day repairs. The Operator must have the ability to perform multiple functions simultaneously and make quick and accurate decisions with minimum supervision. The Roll Mill Operator must be able to work in extreme temperatures, rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed and be able to meet all physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodations. The Rolling Mill operator rolls or reduces sheet material to various degrees of thickness by means of hot rolling, reducing ingots to sheets, breakdowns, bars, or plates of various shapes, lengths and thickness.
Essential Job Functions:*
- Sets up mill for hot rolling of ingots, inserts ingots into furnace, assures proper furnace heats, removes ingots from furnace with tongs or other related equipment and passes ingots through rolls
- Changes roll clearance to conform to standard practices or as directed on order to obtain required product
- Responsible for starting up, shutting down, operating lubrication and set up of rolling mill
- Responsible for verifying of furnace temperatures to assure proper metal heats.
- Maintains records of production and records of inventories according to supervisor's instructions.
- Helps to change rolls when needed
- Trims rolled material according to standard practice, or as directed, in order to get required size, shape or dimension or to prevent product loss
- Flattens product as required
- Keeps work area neat and orderly
- Follows all company safety policies and procedures and reports all accidents, hazards and equipment problems
- Performs other duties as required
Skills/Experience/Training Preferred:
- Ability to use basic hand measuring tools
- Knowledge of and ability to perform basic math functions
- Basic computer proficiency, including documentation data entry and report generation
- Good oral and written communication skills
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
- Must be able to handle up to 36kg (80 lbs) independently and 54kg (118 lbs) with assistance
- Routinely operates/uses equipment, machines, and tools requiring hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity

- Routinely performs duties in production floor environment
- Must be able to reach overhead and below the knees including bending, twisting, pulling and stopping
