Rollins College company history timeline

1885

Cross is known as the "Mother of Rollins College." Rollins was incorporated, organized, and named in the Lyman Park building in nearby Sanford, Florida on 28 April 1885, opening for classes in Winter Park on November 4 of that year.

Rollins College was built in 1885 by the Congregational Church.

1887

15, 1887 - Eatonville becomes one of first all-black towns in United States

Winter Park was incorporated in 1887.

1888

June 8, 1888 - First train rolls into terminus "St Petersburg"

1896

April 15, 1896 - Henry Flagler's railroad arrives in Miami for first time

July 28, 1896: With railroad into town, city of Miami incorporated

1905

Fort Lauderdale Historical Society - launches effort to save 1905 New River Inn

1926

April 1, 1926 - Air Mail service begins in four Florida cities

One of the earliest of these ventures was introduced in 1926 by the College’s eighth president, Hamilton Holt.

1928

July 5, 1928 - Elks begin arriving for 1st Florida national convention

1930

April 19, 1930 - First Publix store incorporated in Winter Haven

1931

May 22, 1931 - Canned rattlesnake goes on sale from Arcadia

May 24, 1931 - Writer develops Planet of the Apes storyline for Miami

1933

In March 1933, President Hamilton Holt fired John Andrew Rice, an atheist scholar and unorthodox teacher, whom Holt had hired, along with three other "golden personalities" (as Holt called them), in his push to put Rollins on the cutting edge of innovative education.

1937

June 1, 1937 - Amelia Earhart leaves Miami to begin final voyage

1938

June 23, 1938 - Marine Studios, 'world's first oceanarium,' opens

1939

1, 1939 - Florida Highway Patrol formed; to begin with 60 troopers

1947

May 15, 1947 - Florida State College for Women goes co-ed, renamed FSU

1954

A commemorative plaque listing the names of the founders was dedicated 1 March 1954 and is displayed in historic Downtown Sanford.

1961

May 5, 1961 - Alan Shepard becomes first American in space

1964

July 22, 1964 - First 536 home lots sold in new city of Coral Springs

1966

June 14, 1966 - FSL's Miami and St Pete set record for longest baseball game

1972

July 10, 1972 - First of two major party conventions opens in Miami Beach

1974

June 13, 1974 - Askew appoints first female Cabinet member

1981

April 12, 1981 - Space Shuttle launched for first time

May 9, 1981 - Sinkhole swallows house, five Porsches in Winter Park

1985

April 28, 1985 - World's tallest sand sculpture built at Treasure Island

2004

On March 4, 2004, Bruce Hyma, the Miami-Dade County chief medical examiner and expert toxicologist hired by State Attorney Lawson Lamar ruled that Kairis had committed suicide via a prescription drug overdose.

2005

The seven-year investigation was officially closed on April 13, 2005.

2007

Following the 2007 Colloquy, Rollins’ 14th president, Lewis Duncan, initiated the Winter Park Institute (WPI) to create a forum for continuation of these advanced conversations.

2011

July 8, 2011 - Last space shuttle launched from Cape Canaveral

In September 2011, as a result of robbery suspects use of the campus to hide from law enforcement officers as well as the armed robbery of two students who were sitting in a car outside their dormitory within one week, the school's administration initiated discussions on new security measures.

2014

On 7 January 2014, a full-scale drill with armed police officers was held to make sure the school was ready in the event a hostile incident was to take place on campus.
