1998

EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) increased 8.2 percent to $17.4 million, compared to $16.1 million in fiscal 1998.

1998: Tony Roma's opens its first Tony Roma's Rib Grill; NPC International spins off Romacorp as a private company, with Sentinel Capital Partners owning 80 percent.

2000

By mid-2000 the company had about 16 Rib Grills in operation, 14 of them company-owned.

The company has struggled since its former franchiser, the Elias Brothers Corp., filed for bankruptcy in 2000.

2001

For the fiscal year ending March 25, 2001, Romacorp reported a loss of $2.03 million, compared to a loss of $254,000 in fiscal 2000. It began 2001 with about 230 locations in the United States and 23 other countries.

The company opened its first Tony Roma's Express in Caracas, Venezuela, with a franchise partner, in the second half of 2001.

As of last year, there were just 33 Bennigan's restaurants and the chain's sales for the year totaled just $62 million — more than half a billion dollars less than the chain's 2001 sales.

2002

During fiscal 2002, international franchising agreements were signed to develop Tony Roma's restaurants in Brazil, the Netherland Antilles, and Trinidad and Tobago.

The cost of baby back ribs, which accounted for 25 percent of sales in fiscal 2002, continued to increase.

Nevertheless, Romacorp continued to open new restaurants and sign new franchise agreements in 2002.

2003

In June 2003, Romacorp hired a new president and CEO, David Head, who was formerly CEO of Shells Seafood Restaurants, Inc. of Tampa, Florida.

The company began fiscal 2003 with a net loss of $478,000 in the first quarter.

2004

However, unlike other disappearing restaurants, after its bankruptcy in 2004, the chain was bought by its former franchisees.

2005
