Ron Jon Surf Shop was founded in 1959 on the New Jersey shore.
In 1959, Reverend Earl Comfort invited his neighbor Ron DiMenna, a former Marine working at his father's grocery, for a surf session.
Ron Jon Surf Shop played a crucial role in the expansion of Hang Ten, the surf company founded by Doris Moore and Duke Boyd, in 1960, in Seal Beach, California.
"The Original" Ron Jon Surf Shop opened in Long Beach Island, New Jersey in 1961.
Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach was the first Ron Jon location to open on the East Coast. It opened in 1963 as the second shop established by founder Ron DiMenna.
Harvey said Central Florida was "a very sleepy, different kind of area" back then — until Walt Disney World Resort opened in 1971 in Orlando.
In 1978, DiMenna was inducted into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame.

Back in 1981, Ben Malik and his buddies at landlocked Lakeland High School would drive 100-plus miles across Central Florida to catch waves in Cocoa Beach.
DiMenna was inducted into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame in 1998.
She joined Ron Jon in 2000 as director of merchandise.
In 2008, Duke Boyd wanted to include DiMenna in his book - "Legends of Surfing" - but the entrepreneur refused to be photographed.
