1868

The following dates represent the highlights of our incredible journey as a faith community for more than 150 years! 1868 Fr.

1876

Joseph Francis Rummel was born in the village of Steinmauern in Baden, Germany, on October 14, 1876.

1881

Saint Angelo Guiseppi Roncalli, Pope John XXIII, was born on November 25, 1881, in Sotto il Monte, a small town in the Province of Bergamo, Italy.

1886

The first Catholic school was established inside Sacred Heart Church in 1886, and a freestanding school was built a few years later.

1899

1899 St Mary’s Church and school is dedicated, serving mainly Polish speaking people.

1905

Sacred Heart School was opened following the opening of the north side parish in 1905, serving mainly the Irish members of St Boniface.

1922

St Paul School opens with an enrollment of 170 students following the parish being established in 1922.

1926

1926 – Notre Dame Academy opens as an all girls’ school owned and operated by the Notre Dame Sisters.

1928

1928 St Andrew School and Church is established to address overcrowding at St Boniface Parish.

1932

1932 Due to the growth of Sacred Heart Parish, Holy Innocents Church and school is dedicated.

1935

In 1935, Rummel was named as the ninth archbishop of the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

1945

In 1945, he launched the Youth Progress Program, a major initiative to raise money for the expansion of the parochial school system.

1951

Saint Augustine High School in Orleans Parish was built in 1951.

1953

In 1953, he was named the Patriarch of Venice, and, accordingly, raised to the rank of cardinal.

1960

In October of 1960, at the age of eighty-two, Rummel broke an arm and a leg in a fall, after which he nearly died from pneumonia.

1962

Archbishop Shaw, Archbishop Chapelle, and Archbishop Rummel, all in Jefferson Parish, were built in 1962.

Bishop Chartrand High School was opened in 1962 to serve the growing needs of the suburban south side Catholics.

1964

1964 – Archbishop Rummel High School opens as an all boys school operated by the De LaSalle Christian Brothers.

Roncalli High School was established in 1964.

1965

1965 Roncalli High School is founded by the people of ten Catholic parishes in Manitowoc and Two Rivers.

1966

Roncalli High School, a co-educational, life-preparatory high school, has a long, rich and proud heritage of Catholic education. Its tradition of service to Indianapolis’ south side extends back more than 90 years with the founding of Sacred Heart High School which, in 1966, was renamed John F. Kennedy Memorial High School.

1969

Established in 1969, through the consolidation of Chartrand High School and Kennedy Memorial High School, Roncalli today serves over 1,200 students.

1980

In 1980, the Aberdeen Catholic School System was consolidated and Sacred Heart and St Mary's Schools were renamed Roncalli.

1988

In 1988-89 school year, the Roncalli Sonshine Patch Preschool/Daycare Program was created.

1993

Since the initiation of the special needs resource program in 1993, over 150 students with a variety of learning disabilities are served through our award winning STARS and Life Academy programs.

2000

In 2000, John was declared “Blessed Angelo Guiseppi Roncalli” by Pope John Paul II, the penultimate step on the road to sainthood.

2003

2003 – On July 3, 2003, Roncalli Catholic High School was brought into formal association with Lasallian ministries of the Midwest District of the De LaSalle Christian Brothers.

2005

Following the Building Faith and Futures Campaign, additional construction began in 2005 to expand the facilities to include a new fine arts wing and auditorium along with a new guidance facility, and greatly expanded space for our special needs resource center.

2006

2006 The former Manitowoc Area Catholic School System becomes St Francis of Assisi School, serving students from 3k-grade 8.

2014

Our Roncalli Catholic patron, Blessed Angelo Guiseppe Roncalli, Pope John XXIII, was canonized on April 27, 2014 along with his successor Pope John Paul II.

2015

Roncalli celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015 and is supported by 12 parishes in the region.

2020

2020 The Diocese of Green Bay helps to establish the merger of SFA School and Roncalli High School, forming Roncalli Catholic Schools.
