Rosecrans Memorial Airport company history timeline

1826

Saint Joseph was founded by Joseph Robidoux, a French fur trader who founded the first settlement which was known as Black Snake Hills in 1826.

1837

The Platte Purchase joined his land to the state of Missouri in 1837.

1845

The first known lawman was Constable Howell Thomas in 1845.

1859

Additional growth commenced in 1859, when the railroad reached St Joseph assuring its role as a supply and distribution point to the entire western half of the country.

1860

On April 3, 1860, three men, Russell, Majors and Waddel founded the Pony Express which carried the United States Mail and the news to Sacramento, California.

Political tension leading up to the Civil War led to the establishment of the Pony Express in 1860, with St Joseph becoming the eastern terminus.

In 1904, the police force had grown to having a Chief, Captain, two Sergeants, a Humane officer, a Matron, two drivers, three signal operators, five detectives, and fifty-one patrolmen.

1922

In 1922 the first Rosecrans Field was opened at Lake Contrary.

1936

In 1936, the first one-way radio communication was installed, and the call letters were KQBW.

1939

The 1939 airport was developed by the city as a municipal airport.

In 1939, the Central Police Headquarters was built at 710 South 9th Street.

1947

With the establishment of an independent United States Air Force in 1947, the military facilities became part of the newly established Air National Guard.

1948

In 1948 much of the airfield's facilities were conveyed to the city, with the exception of 142 acres (0.57 km2) set aside for use by the Air National Guard.

1969

The last scheduled commercial airline service at the airport was in 1969, three years before the opening of Kansas City International Airport, 30 miles (48 km) south of downtown St Joseph via Interstate 29.

1983

Since 1983 the AATTC has hosted an annual Tactics Symposium at Rosecrans ANGB as a forum for providing crosstalk across the tactics community.

1986

In 1986, the department moved to the combined Law Enforcement Center at 501 Faraon Street, with the County Sheriff's Department, complete with the latest technological developments.

1994

In 1994, the diagonal runway, Runway 13-31, was rebuilt into a new assault landing strip for the Air National Guard and as an additional VFR runway for general aviation aircraft.

2010

The city of St Joseph is the county seat of Buchanan County and the eighth largest city in Missouri with approximately 77,176 residents as of 2012.
