Roundy's Supermarkets company history timeline

1872

The company was founded in 1872 in Milwaukee as Smith, Roundy & Co. by William E. Smith, Judson Roundy and Sidney Hauxhurst.

1885

The company grew out of its first quarters and moved to a larger building at Milwaukee's Broadway and Buffalo Streets in 1885.

1902

The firm took on new partners and incorporated in 1902 as Roundy, Peckham & Dexter Co.

1922

1922: The company begins to offer its own private Roundy's brand.

1953

In 1953 the firm reorganized as a grocery cooperative, with only independent retailers allowed to hold Roundy's stock.

1962

Sales reached $50 million in 1962 and then doubled to $100 million in the next nine years.

1983

Roundy's had 27 Pick 'n Save stores in Wisconsin by 1983.

1984

The company spent $40 million in 1984 to buy Scot Lad Foods, a grocery distributor in Lansing, Illinois.

1986

Roundy's Chairman and CEO Vincent R. Little took early retirement in 1986 after 12 years at the post.

1988

In 1988, the company bought Cardinal Foods Inc., an Ohio-based food distributor, and another Ohio firm, a health and beauty aid distributor called American Merchandising Associates Inc.

Roundy's sales had increased significantly by 1988, up to $2.4 billion.

1989

The company leased a new warehouse in Mazomanie, Wisconsin, in 1989, as it ran out of space in its old Wauwatosa facility.

1991

1991: Roundy's and the Teamsters Union sign a five-year contract, ending a bitter labor dispute.

1992

Then in April 1992 Roundy's announced plans to add capacity at its Wauwatosa plant and move some work from a Fort Wayne, Indiana, warehouse to its other Wisconsin warehouse in Mazomanie.

1993

Jerry Lestina, who had been named CEO in 1993, seemed intent on staying the course.

1994

Then in October 1994, the company announced it would merge with Spartan Stores, another grocery wholesale cooperative based in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

2001

Roundy's made another auspicious acquisition in 2001 when it bought Copps Food Centers, then the largest family-owned supermarket chain in Wisconsin, for $95 million.

2002

Roundy's was taken private in 2002 through purchase by the Chicago private-equity firm Willis Stein & Partners.

2007

A strong effort was made in 2007 to sell Roundy's, but because of softness in the credit markets, there were no takers.

2015

On November 11, 2015, Roundy's announced its sale to the Kroger, a deal valued at $800 million including debt, which was completed on December 18, 2015.
