Rowland Hall-st. Mark's School company history timeline

1871

Eventually, the girls’ school was absorbed into Rowland Hall, a girls’ boarding school which opened in 1871 on “A” Street and First Avenue where the Madeleine Choir School is housed today.

1873

Thus, in 1873 the St Mark’s Boys’ School on First South opposite the City Hall east of State Street welcomed male students to the new building.

1880

Rowland Hall opened in 1880 as a boarding school for girls from ranches in neighboring states; the school opened on the First Avenue campus in Salt Lake City.

1882

In 1882, Rowland Hall graduated its first students, Daisy Senter and Lucy Cook.

1887

1891

In 1891, Rowland Hall’s early childhood education program began with kindergarten classes.

1896

Despite its popularity and efficacy, St Mark’s Boys School, along with many other private parochial schools that had grown up over the decades, chose to close its doors after the Territory became a state with mandated free public education in 1896.

1917

The first official Candle and Carol service was in 1917.

1925

A Rowland Hall tradition beginning in 1925 and continuing for nearly 60 years, the annual bazaar was a student fundraiser with an international theme.

1947

The first literary magazine featuring the work of Winged Lions was Flashlight, dating back to 1947.

1948

Elizabeth "Betty" Corr became the headmistress of Rowland Hall in 1948.

1956

In 1956, St Mark's re-opened as an independent day school for boys in two historic houses and a so-called tin shed that were located next door to Rowland Hall, sharing the same city block.

1959

1964

St Mark's merged with Rowland Hall in 1964 to become Rowland Hall-St Mark's, an independent coeducational school.

1965

The winter sports program began in 1965 as an auxiliary program for all grades.

1975

The school’s experiential learning program predates Interim, but this tradition of weeklong excursions and hands-on learning for high schoolers began in 1975

1978

Julie Barrett first joined the Rowland Hall community as a parent in 1978.

1983

Physical Education Teacher Pat Ammon’s vision for Color Day was first realized in 1983, and has been a favorite memory for students for almost 35 years.

1995

Rowland Hall volunteers initiated a partnership with Crossroads Urban Center in 1995 to provide holiday dinners for hundreds of local families in need.

2002

The Lower and Beginning Schools moved to the McCarthey Campus on Guardsman Way in 2002.

2009

The annual fall gathering of the entire school began in 2009.

2014

Upon her retirement in 2014, the board established the Julie Ashton Barrett Teaching and Learning Fellowship, which supports an annual visit by a master teacher or learning consultant to work closely with our faculty in service of enhancing the learning environment for all.
