Royal Esquire Club company history timeline

1948

Its members recently revisited the original 1948 bylaws, concluding that those founding principles — being civically involved and socially and politically relevant in the community, among others — should still guide them.

1952

Later on the club moved to 12th Avenue and Jackson Street, and finally to a house that they purchased at 1254 S Washington Street in 1952.

1964

In May 1964 the club hosted a buffet dinner for more than 50 women in honor of club mothers in the seven women’s clubs: Rhinestones, Stella Puella, Qualilmates, Just a Mere, La Femmes Charmonte, Mary Mahoney Nurses, and Vogue clubs.

1985

The club was purchased for $165,000 and the transaction closed on August 30, 1985.

In 1985 the Seattle School District bought all of the property between Yesler and Washington and 12th and 14th avenues in order to build a new Bailey Gatzert Elementary School.

In 1985, the club relocated to an old Columbia City pool and bingo hall where Ed Hill, a longtime neighborhood resident, recalls lines outside three nights a week in the early years.

1992

In 1992 a woman’s auxiliary was formed made up mostly of members’ wives, widows, and companions.

1994

Former real-estate broker Darryl Smith moved to Columbia City in 1994 for its diversity.

The Royal Esquires have opened their doors to worthwhile community events. For example in 1994 the Black Dollar Days Task Force used the main room of the Club for a session on computer technology.

1998

In 1998, the Esquire’s property was appraised at nearly $337,000, according to the King County Department of Assessments.

2008

On November 4, 2008, the Club opened its doors to the public and it was filled with enthusiastic people watching the returns on election night when Barack Obama was announced the winner and the new president.

2010

Today (2010) there are some 60 members and more than 4,000 associate members reflecting a 50 percent drop in regular membership due to age and the failure to attract younger members.

2013

In 2013, construction began on the 193-unit Angeline Apartments complex in the lot — previously home to a strip of multicultural businesses — where developers once refuted Smith.

2015

By the time Merriwether joined in 2015, the Esquire was “on the rope-a-dope,” he said.
