Royal Resort company history timeline

1974

In 1974 the founders of Royal Resorts decided: "To build a vacation home that they themselves would like to own and to sell it in a way that they themselves would like to be sold." A Cancun pioneer, Royal Resorts started on this premise and is still guided by it today.

1974: Brothers Kenji and Masakuni Osano bought the resort from Sheraton Hotels and Resort, forming the Kyo-ya Company to manage it shortly thereafter.

1975

Cancun was in its infancy when Royal Resorts was founded in 1975.

1976

The Thunderbird was built for about $2 million, and operated until 1976 when it was purchased and renamed the Silverbird by Major Riddle.

1977

In 1977, construction began on the company's first resort Club Internacional de Cancun.

1983

Our resorts have received the coveted Five Star Rating from Interval International every year since 1983 when the rating was first established.

1997

2006

In 2006, Royal Resorts opened its first resort in the Riviera Maya, The Royal Haciendas, which is located in the Grand Coral beach and golf resort community, five minutes from Playa del Carmen.

2009

The “Pink Palace of the Pacific' emerged as an internationally renowned resort following its complete renovation in 2009.

2009: Starwood Hotels reopened The Royal Hawaiian as a part of its “The Luxury Collection” after taking a year to fully renovation the resort.

2010

The project only took six months to complete, debuting as it originally did at the height of the “Roaring Twenties.” Starwood Hotels further continued its renovation in 2010 by refurbishing the fabulous Royal Beach Tower.

2011

The Royal Hawaiian then joined Historic Hotels of America two years later in 2011.

2015

In 2015, the now 17-story Mailani Tower opened, gracefully bridging the sumptuous splendor of the property’s original allure, with the conveniences and comforts expected by modern travelers.
