RCAC company history timeline

1978

Founded in 1978, RCAC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides training, technical and financial resources and advocacy so rural communities can achieve their goals and visions.

1979

Virginia Water Project’s first RCAP program proposal was funded in 1979.

1982

In 1982 to meet the growing demand for affordable rental properties in the nation's poorest communities, HAC created a subsidiary, Rural Housing Services, Inc., to develop affordable rental units in partnership with local organizations using tax credits.

1989

In 1989, NDWP formally became the Rural Community Assistance Program, Inc. (RCAP). Today RCAP is a national network of non-profit organizations dedicated to empower and assist rural low income people to improve the quality of life in their communities.

1990

The 1990’s were marked with relative stability and growth of key services, including water and wastewater technical assistance, administering rental subsidies, expansion of affordable elderly housing, and domestic violence transitional housing.

1993

In 1993, Southeast Rural Community Assistance Project, Inc. (SERCAP) became the successor to the Virginia Water Project.

2011

In 2011, RCAP was also selected to administer the State’s HomeBASE program, a homelessness prevention program funded by the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development.

2012

In 2012, RCAP expanded its Worcester office to better service the growing needs in the Central Massachusetts and Southern Worcester county region.
