Russell Cellular company history timeline

1993

Established in December of 1993, as a home based business, owner Jeff Russell began as a lone sales representative selling Alltel Wireless from the trunk of his old Dodge Omni.

1994

In June 1994, the first Russell Cellular retail location was opened.

1998

Sales continued to soar, and Jeff Russell was awarded the 1998 Small Business Association Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for the Kansas City District.

2002

In 2002, the company made its first acquisition of a one-store competitor in Springfield.

2004

The Springfield Business Journal named Russell Cellular as the area’s fastest growing company of 2004.

2008

In 2008, the Alltel Wireless and Verizon Wireless merger was announced.

In 2008, the company made its first large-scale acquisition of an 18-store company in Ohio.

2009

In 2009, Alltel Wireless was acquired by Verizon Wireless and all Russell Cellular stores were converted to Verizon by the close of 2009.

2010

The organization’s success was again recognized with the Springfield BusinessJournal’s 2010 “Dynamic Dozen” award, as the fastest growing company in Southwest Missouri.

2013

Russell Cellular celebrated their 20-year anniversary in December 2013.

2015

In 2015, the organization continued its pattern of growth into new states and Verizon markets.

2017

In 2017, Russell Cellular joined the Verizon “Big 6” program, which helped accelerate growth in new markets, including California and Florida.

2018

By the first quarter of 2018, Russell Cellular maintained over 400 stores in 30 states.
