Russell Medical Center company history timeline

1923

Founded by Benjamin C. Russell to provide health services for the employees of Russell Manufacturing Company and residents of Alexander City, Russell Hospital opened its doors Wednesday, July 17, 1923.

1941

In 1941 an annex consisting of five private rooms and a nursery was added to the rear of the first floor of Russell Hospital.

1948

In 1948 another expansion project resulted in the addition of a new delivery room, lying-in room, a ward, additional private room and sterilizing room.

1959

Russell Medical has been accredited by The Joint Commission since 1959.

1963

The existing site, located on US Highway 280, was acquired from Russell Corporation and construction of a new 100-bed facility commenced in 1963.

1965

The doors of the new hospital, characterized by the modern forest green tile, were opened to the public on February 2, 1965.

1970

She supervised the management of the hospital and served as President and Chairman of the Board until her death in 1970.

1988

Established in 1988, the Russell Medical Foundation serves as the philanthropic resource for Russell Medical.

1989

In 1989 the Professional Office Building, adjacent to the hospital was constructed and dedicated in honor of Mr.

1994

Frank Harris was named President and CEO in 1994.

1996

In 1996 the facility name was changed from Russell Hospital and Healthcare Centers to Russell Medical Center, reflecting the changes in services, technology and complexity.

2011

A 2.2 million da Vinci Robotic Surgical System was purchased in summer 2011, providing cutting edge robot-assisted surgery capabilities for patients in our region.

Russell Medical was proud to be named one of the 100 Top Hospitals® for 2011 by Thompson Reuters, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare.

2012

January, 2012 marked the hallmark of another milestone as Russell Medical proudly announced a newly formed joint venture business relationship with the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation.

2015

A new hospital-based primary care practice, Total Healthcare, was opened in late 2015, as well as Russell Medical’s first rural health clinic, Health Partners of Goodwater, located in neighboring Coosa County.

2016

In 2016 the facility changed its name and brand to Russell Medical; recruited a new physician to the Medical Park Family Care Center in Dadeville, AL, and welcomed a new medical director for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine.

2017

2017 marked the year for construction of an expansive, new facility on campus housing Total Healthcare and a separate Urgent Care clinic,, which is open seven days per week.

2018

In 2018, the parent company acquired an additional 7 acres and the former Russell Retail building, extending the campus to Elkahatchee Road.

2019

To meet the growing demands of post-acute care, The Transitional Care Unit opened in 2019 for patients who have suffered acute medical or surgical events as a result of an illness, injury or exacerbation of a disease process.
