Rutgers University company history timeline

1977

While the Interfunctional Management program catered predominantly to large, more established corporations, the school expanded its outreach to small companies and entrepreneurs with the establishment of the New Jersey Small Business Development Center (NJSBDC) in 1977.

1979

In 1979, RU Hungry was established alongside the nine original grease trucks, all of which were owned by Vietnam War veterans.

1979 Fred Grassle leads first expedition to explore undersea hydrothermal vents

1980

1980s - In 1980, RBS launched an Executive M.B.A. (E.M.B.A.) program for middle-level managers who want to earn their degrees on a full-time basis while working full time.

1981

1981 Alumnus Michael Gottlieb is first to report what would come to be known as AIDS

1984

In June 1984, the university's Board of Governors approved a reorganization of the School of Administrative Services into the School of Business–New Brunswick.

1986

The new school received final approval from the New Jersey Department of Higher Education in February 1986 and began operating on September 1 of that year.

1988

In 1988, the growing demand for business offerings led to the founding of the School of Business–Camden, the first business school in southern New Jersey to earn prestigious accreditation from the AACSB International.

1990

1 in accounting information systems research according to Accounting Rankings compiled by BYU based on having the most peer reviewed articles in 12 accounting journals since 1990.

1995

In 1995, the School of Business–New Brunswick was also put under the auspices of the Faculty of Management.

2001

By the program's 30th anniversary in 2001, more than 1,500 projects had been completed for some 700 organizations.

2007

2007 Nation’s first PhD program in childhood studies debuts

2009

A new state-of-the-art facility was opened at 1 Washington Park in fall 2009 that reflects today's modern business environment and technology.

2009 First Transatlantic undersea robotic glider crossing likened to Lindbergh aircraft crossing

2013

The City of Newark gains a second Rutgers campus: the Rutgers Health Sciences campus at Newark, part of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), which came into existence in July 2013 when the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) merged with Rutgers University.

The grease trucks made headlines until they were eventually phased out and officially removed from campus by the University in 2013.

2018

Director of the NJ Small Business Development Center, was selected for the New Jersey State Star by the national ASBDC in 2018.

Financial Times released a comprehensive overall ranking of business schools in 2018 placing Rutgers Business School No.

2020

2020 First SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus test allowing people to collect their own saliva at home and send to a lab for results developed by Rutgers lab and collaborators, and approved for use by the FDA.

2021

2021 Rutgers announces historical plaques will be installed at four New Brunswick locations: Hardenbergh Hall, Frelinghuysen Hall, Wood Lawn Mansion, and Livingston Campus.
