Sabel Steel company history timeline

1856

Founded in 1856 by Keith Sabel’s great-great-grandfather, the family brought all of their belongings from Louisville, Kentucky to the Montgomery, Alabama area.

1987

Sabel Steel was purchased from the family in 1987 in a leveraged buyout; one of many caught up in the industry consolidation at that time.

1990

More recent pictures show how much the company has grown lately – aerial shots of other Sabel Steel plants in Louisiana, Georgia and across Alabama, all of which have been built since Keith Sabel took over as president in 1990.

They’ve quadrupled the size of their Montgomery operation since 1990, including building a new sales center.

1998

In 1998, Sabel Steel became one of the earlier steel service centers to invest as an owner/member of the North American Steel Alliance.

2000

Keith Sabel remained involved in running the business and in 2000 was able to buy back the company to remain the independent metal distribution company it is today.

2008

Keith’s father, Jimmie Sabel, died in 2008.
