Mortenson is currently seeking a passionate Safety Manager I who can interact with a variety of staff at all levels in an ever-changing environment, remaining flexible, resourceful, proactive and efficient with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. The Safety Manager will provide management, leadership, direction, and support within Mortenson's Zero Injury Safety program for multiple project teams and construction sites. The Safety Manager may also have supervisory responsibility to one or more safety professionals.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide safety oversight, leadership, and direction in the implementation of the Zero Injury Safety program across multiple project sites
Lead project management teams in developing site-specific electrical safety programs and activities
Identify training needs and conduct safety orientation and electrical training programs, including train-the-trainer sessions
Review safety submittals and attend preconstruction and preparatory meetings with subcontractors
Provide professional direction and mentorship to Safety, Senior Safety Engineers, and Coordinators
Oversee documentation, tracking, and analysis of all Safety, Injury, and Hazard statistics, trend analyses, and OSHA reports
Conduct work area safety audits
Conduct or assist with major incident analysis
Monitor and review subcontractor activities for safety concerns
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in safety, occupational health, or equivalent
Minimum six years of construction safety experience
OR
High school diploma, CHST Certification, OSHA 500, and minimum of 10 years of continuous construction experience leading crews and planning work
At least six years as a dedicated construction safety professional managing project safety programs, conducting/reviewing hazard analyses, developing controls, conducting safety training, and planning work activities (or equivalent experience)
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification preferred
Current driver's license
Detail orientation to organize and manage multiple project tasks
Ability to work in Microsoft Office and pertinent safety-related software programs
Positive and professional attitude, strong customer service skills
Ability to interpret and communicate Mortenson policies
Effective public speaking and presentation skills

The base pay range for this role is $97,600 - $146,400. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL - 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR - 10%, Washington, D.C. - 12.5%).
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity. This position is eligible for Mortenson's incentive plan.

Provide oversight and safety support for high-risk technical programs (e.g., welding, automotive, diesel, autobody), including respiratory protection (fit testing/medical evaluations), spill containment protocols, ventilation, and compressed gas handling. Oversee safe storage, handling, and reporting for grounds and facilities chemical use (e.g., pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers), ensuring compliance with state applicator regulations and environmental protection standards. Oversee occupational health and safety programs, including ergonomics, PPE , hearing conservation, bloodborne pathogen exposure control, and heat illness prevention. Review and monitor contractor/vendor safety compliance, including pre-work safety plans, permits, and adherence to SCC standards when working on campus. Hazardous Waste and Laboratory Safety Oversee and coordinate the collection, storage, labeling, and disposal of hazardous, biological, and chemical waste across all campuses. Ensure that all handling and disposal practices are performed in accordance with RCRA , OSHA , and other applicable regulations. Coordinate with academic departments, especially Health Sciences and laboratory-based programs, to implement safe practices for lab setup, use, and cleanout. Maintain chemical inventories and Safety Data Sheet ( SDS ) systems in collaboration with instructional and facilities teams. Support procedures related to sharps disposal, spill response, and containment in labs, clinics, and instructional spaces. Determine and maintain institutional hazardous waste generator status in accordance with federal and state regulations. Coordinate with local agencies (e.g., county health agencies) to ensure required permits (e.g., special waste forms) are obtained and maintained. Ensure microbiological and biological waste disposal practices meet ASM and CDC biosafety standards and align with local permitting requirements. Conduct safety reviews of diverse campus environments-including labs, shops, and areas with livestock or other animals-to identify risks and ensure compliance with applicable health, safety, and environmental standards. Training, Education, and Outreach Develop and deliver EH&S training programs to faculty and staff on topics such as chemical hygiene, lab safety, hazard communication, waste handling, emergency procedures, and job-specific safety protocols. Maintain documentation of training completion in compliance with regulatory and institutional standards. Assist departments in integrating safety practices into curriculum and operational procedures. Provide onboarding safety training and resources for new employees whose roles involve exposure to hazardous materials or processes. Provide training and oversight on laboratory biosafety practices in accordance with ASM and CDC guidance. Develop and coordinate campus-wide safety drills (e.g., fire, chemical spill, severe weather, active threat) in partnership with Safety & Security and Emergency Management. Recordkeeping, Documentation, and Reporting Maintain records of regulatory compliance, inspections, training, accidents/incidents, and waste manifests per retention and reporting requirements. Assist with the preparation and submission of annual environmental and safety reports, including Tier II, hazardous waste, and chemical inventories. Support the integration of EH&S data into institutional systems, dashboards, or compliance tracking tools. Maintain internal SOPs and documentation aligned with the EHSMS structure. Ensure OSHA -required workplace injury and illness reporting ( OSHA 300 logs) in coordination with HR. Incidence Response and Risk Mitigation Serve as a point of contact for chemical, biological, or environmental emergencies; coordinate response efforts with Safety & Security, Campus Operations, and Physical Plant staff. Lead investigations into accidents, near-misses, and exposure incidents; conduct root cause analysis and issue corrective action recommendations. Monitor safety trends and support strategies to reduce risk and promote a proactive safety culture across SCC locations. Maintain and update emergency response protocols in collaboration with campus administration and local responders. Support business continuity planning by integrating EH&S risk considerations into institutional emergency preparedness strategies. Cross-Functional Collaboration and Communication Work closely with campus AVPs, Facilities/Plant Operations staff, Safety & Security personnel, academic departments, and external vendors/contractors to ensure coordinated EH&S implementation. Provide guidance and technical assistance to supervisors and staff on regulatory compliance and safety best practices. Represent the College in regulatory audits and partner with consultants (e.g., Olsson) for technical input as needed. Collaborate with Human Resources, Compliance, and the Instructional Division in supporting occupational safety, employee training, and safety-related accommodations or policies. Chair or participate in institutional safety-related committees, such as Safety Committee, Biosafety Committee, or Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee ( IACUC ), as applicable Other/General Responsibilities Represent the EH&S needs on campus/college administrative teams and work groups, including the campus management council and other College teams as assigned. Attend division and college meetings as assigned. Assist in the formulation/review/implementation of campus operating procedures. Internal/external reporting and regulation compliance; Lead the development, review, and revision of department and campus-based reporting or publications such as the annual security report, college catalog, and other departmental and campus-based materials. Review, monitor, formulate, revise, implement, and direct Environmental Health & Safety Management Systems to ensure that processes are consistent with college and campus policies, regulations, and operating procedures. Inform and assist staff with the interpretation and implementation of directives and any changes in college and campus policies, rules, and regulations in accordance with city, state, and federal regulations. RESPONSIBILITIES
Works directly with the Project Manager and the management team to develop and implement an effective site-specific EHS plan, while adhering to all corporate, divisional, and regional EHS programs and processes.
Assists Project Managers and EHS Managers/Specialists in the coordination of subcontractor EHS protocols, including vendors and owner personnel working on company project(s). A Brief Summary of This Position:
This position serves as Valmont's Regional Manager, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), with expanded oversight across a defined geographic region with multiple sites or across multiple businesses. This role leads the deployment of EHS strategies and systems across multiple sites or businesses, ensuring consistency and alignment with corporate objectives. The Regional Manager collaborates with senior leaders and site teams to drive performance, manage risk, and support regulatory compliance. This position plays a more strategic role in shaping EHS culture, while continuing to support incident response, system improvements, and integration of EHS into business operations.
Essential Functions:
Oversee a defined geographic region with multiple sites or across multiple businesses.
Reports to the EHS Director; more likely to have direct reports.
Responsible for regional implementation of EHS strategy across multiple sites or multiple businesses.
Leads cross-site/ cross-business initiatives and ensure alignment with corporate standards.
Drives continuous improvement across the region.; multiple sites or multiple businesses.
Leads multi-site / multi business risk assessments and hazard mitigation.
Acts as a liaison between corporate and site-level teams.
Provides strategic input into EHS program development.
Support the development and maintenance of Global EHS Standards related to occupational safety, fire protection, environmental and sustainability compliance; examples include Accountability, Electrical Safety, Hazard Communication, Hot Work, Contractors, Fall Protection, Due Diligence, Site Closure, etc.
Support the implementation, update, and maintenance of Valmont's EHS Information Management System (Intelex) and LMS training platforms; Integrates business strategy into automated and semi-automated processes
Develop and maintain risk assessment tools to identify and minimize exposure to safety hazards
Effective oral/written communication skills to clearly and concisely present information to key stakeholders
Demonstrated ability to prioritize a large number of projects and track projects through completion
Ability to effectively interact with others, establishing open, candid and trusting relationships
Thorough knowledge of OSHA, EPA and Fire Prevention technologies (or similar region/country regulations)
Recognize and be able to integrate Lean and Continuous Improvement (CI) concepts into EHS and vice-versa
This role requires up to 50% travel (internationally/domestically), including overnight stays

Serves as a liaison between Global EHS and Risk Management and Human Resources on applicable topics
Develops and support implementation of emergency management and business continuity programs
Leads the serious post incident review, communication of incidents that result or have the potential to result in serious injury; partners with Regional EHS Director/Managers to identify root causes and preventive actions are effectively deployed across the organization
Provides training/mentoring to regional/site representatives to strengthen EHS compliance and best practices
Ensures the preparation of material evidence for hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations
Formulates and implements actions on various EHS topics, as necessary, and shares updates with senior leadership
Provide training on in-house compliance assurance program (CAP) and ensures implementation across the organization
Ensure training programs are developed and implement to ensure regulatory compliance and incident best practices
Stay current with EHS/property conservation regulations and standards

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate:
Preferred Bachelor's with 7+ years relevant work experience in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Protection, Environmental Science, Engineering, Sustainability or related discipline or Associate's Degree with 9+ years of relevant experience or 11+ years of relevant years of experience of increasing responsibility with an emphasis on implementation and maintenance of environmental, health and safety programs, fire prevention, sustainability and risk management
Track record of making effective decisions, even when dealing with limited or ambiguous information
Ability to lead and support corporate, division, business unit and site teams responsible for managing EHS risks
Prior proven experience utilizing an enterprise-wide safety information system/database
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
Previous experience with international locations and responsibilities or completed successful assignments
Experience with OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) or ISO 45001, 14001 desired
Prior experience implementing and/or maintaining an enterprise-wide database system
Professional certifications preferred such as CSP, ASP, CHMM, CIH (or similar certification)
