The EHS Manager will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive EHS policies and procedures tailored to our growing manufacturing operations. This role requires someone with hands-on experience in a fast-paced startup environment, who can build EHS frameworks from the ground up, roll up their sleeves to implement these frameworks, drive a strong safety culture, and ensure regulatory compliance. This is an onsite role. The EHS Manager will be required to work on-site in our facility in Woodinville, WA 5 days per week and attend quarterly company events in the Seattle area. These events are geared towards fostering connections between colleagues, building a strong team, and having fun together. Modern Hydrogen is an energy & materials company. Responsibilities: Develop and implement EHS policies, programs, and procedures for our facility in Washington state and field sites. Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, state, and local regulations, as well as industry best practices. Lead risk assessments, equipment commissioning assessments, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and process safety reviews. Foster a safety-first culture, creatively engaging employees at all levels. Develop and conduct EHS training programs, including new hire onboarding, emergency preparedness, and compliance training. Lead our Safety Committee, bringing together cross-departmental participants to identify hazards, share best practices, and drive continuous safety improvements. Maintain and submit required regulatory reports (OSHA logs, environmental permits, air/wastewater compliance, hazardous material handling, etc.). Stay up to date on regulatory changes and advise leadership on implications and suggested path forward. Conduct regular EHS audits and inspections, quickly addressing any non-compliance issues. Lead incident investigations to identify root causes and implement corrective actions. Develop and test emergency response plans, ensuring preparation for a wide variety of emergencies. Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and external EHS audits. Establish metrics and KPIs to track and continuously improve EHS performance. Manage hazardous waste disposal, air permits, and stormwater compliance. Implement environmental impact assessments and mitigation strategies. Travel to Modern Hydrogen's pilot and customer locations to implement, enforce, and ensure compliance with Modern Hydrogen's site-specific safety policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned. Skills and Experience: 5+ years of EHS experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment. Startup or high-growth company experience strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, DOT, and relevant state/local regulations. Proven experience building EHS programs from scratch or significantly improving existing frameworks. Hands-on experience with incident investigations, root cause analysis (RCA), and corrective actions. Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage employees and collaborate with leadership. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience using EHS metrics to drive improvements. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint), as well as chat and teleconferencing applications (e.g. Teams, Slack) Consistent with applicable federal, state, and local laws, and the ability to pass a drug and alcohol test based on customer site requirements. What the Role Offers - Environmental Health and Safety Manager The Environmental Health and Safety Manager will develop, implement and manage the safety programs for multiple work sites in Redmond and Woodinville, WA. This role is expected to: * Establish and oversee vessel safety and training for all vessels and the personnel onboard. * Ensure all regulatory, industry standard and company policies and programs are implemented, including gap analysis. * Track, analyze, act upon, and keep appropriate people informed of vessel safety, environmental, marine, pollution and navigational/operational regulations, requirements, policies and impending changes from applicable authorities, including the U.S. Coast Guard, OSHA, FCC and their State and Local counterparts as well as those set by industry standards. * Establish, maintain, and perform vessel safety audit program, to include both formal and informal audit processes, written findings and recommendations, time-bound processes for corrective actions, and appropriate notification to relevant parties with escalation to management or executives as appropriate. * Track, review, and analyze shipboard injury and casualty reports and data; identify and communicate trends, ensure appropriate corrective action is taken to prevent future occurrences, and ensure appropriate company and regulatory agencies are timely notified. * Provide expertise and guidance to vessel officers, crew, and management, and advise on vessel manning, licensing, and documentation requirements. * Establish, document and maintain company training program for the vessels, to include ensuring maintenance of training records * Oversee Shipboard Pollution Prevention Program, including but are not limited to Non-Tank Vessel Response plans, Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plans (SOPEP) for Washington, Canadian, Oregon and Alaska oil spill response, and manage contracts and relationships with third-party response providers. * Provide support and direction for shipboard personnel regarding the Process Safety Management Program (PSMP) on affected vessels. * Tracks and records marine casualties involving company vessels and ensures the appropriate notifications are made to state and federal authorities. Coordinates with Vice President of Safety, Legal, Environmental, Risk Management, and others as appropriate on any notices of fines, notices of non-compliance, regulatory audits/inspections, and proposed penalties relating to maritime casualties. * Acts as senior advisor on functions pertaining to the maintenance of required shipboard documents with the exception of those functions specifically handled by the Environmental team such as NPDES permits. * Develops, implements, maintains Safety Management System covering vessel operations.
