Position Summary
The Construction Site Safety Engineer is a mid-level, field-focused safety professional responsible for implementing, enforcing, and continuously improving safety performance across Virginia Transformer Corporation (VTC) construction and expansion projects. This role works directly under the Construction Site Superintendent and serves as a certified safety trainer, authorized to deliver safety training to both internal VTC employees and external contractors supporting greenfield and brownfield expansions.

Key Responsibilities
Site Safety Leadership & Compliance

Partner with the Construction Site Superintendent to integrate safety planning into daily work sequencing and execution.

Identify, assess, and mitigate hazards associated with excavation, concrete placement, steel erection, crane and rigging operations, electrical work, confined spaces, and work at heights.
Track, assign, and verify closure of corrective actions related to safety findings.
Training & Workforce Enablement (Certified Trainer)
Serve as a certified safety instructor authorized to train VTC employees, contractors, and subcontractors.
Deliver new-hire and contractor site safety orientations, including project-specific requirements.
Lead OSHA-based training, toolbox talks, safety stand-downs, and targeted risk-based training sessions.
Support standardization of safety training content across VTC expansion projects.
Incident Prevention, Response & Reporting
Lead or support incident, near-miss, and hazard investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective action development.
Maintain accurate documentation of training records, permits, inspections, incidents, and safety metrics.
Prepare regular safety performance reports for the Superintendent, Project Management, and Corporate EH&S.
Contractor Coordination & Authority
Act as the primary field safety liaison between the Construction Site Superintendent, contractors, and VTC leadership.
Review and approve contractor Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), lift plans, and method statements prior to work execution.
Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions or behaviors are observed.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor's degree in Safety Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
5-8 years of safety experience supporting industrial or large-scale construction projects.

Position Description

Job Responsibilities
* Observe job activities and identify any site hazards.
* Ensure that the company complies with all regulatory guidelines (OSHA, MSHA, EPA, etc.)
* Provide direction to management and employees for immediate actions if hazards or compliance issues are present.
* Identify conditions which could produce accidents and communicate to operations management so that conditions can be eliminated.
* Communicate safety findings to peer Safety Professionals so that information is shared between areas and sites.

* Participate and/or lead reviews of safety data and help develop responses for any identified trends.
* Conduct safety training and new employee orientation.
* Create records of safety training and ensure that they are properly input into the correct computer system.
* Complete minimum required field hazard assessments
* Coach foremen and craft personnel on proper use of pre-task plans
* Visually inspect Thompson vehicles/equipment for damage and roadworthiness.
* Assist in pre-job/shutdown planning.
* Make personal contact with the working crews to build relationships, address concerns and identify improvement opportunities.
* Counsel/coach employee when policy infractions are noted.
* Attend customer sponsored/mandated safety meetings.

Job Qualifications
* One of the following:
* High School Graduate, OSHA 30, and 5 years of industrial construction field experience
* Associates Degree and 3 years of industrial construction field experience
* Bachelor's Degree and 0 years of industrial construction experience
* Candidates with Associates or Bachelors in non-Safety related disciplines must have an OSHA 30 certification as well
* 2 years of safety experience in any construction or general industry setting

The Fire and Life Safety Technician will be reporting to the Assistant Director of Health, Safety, and Environmental Quality. In this role, the primary responsibility will be to ensure that Student Affairs residence halls, dining centers, and student centers comply with local, state, and federal fire codes.
Job duties will include conducting inspections of fire extinguishers, exit signs, and emergency lights, performing building walkthroughs and inspections to identify fire code violations and safety concerns.
