Staff Safety Engineer
Atomic MacHines 3.7
Safety specialist job in Emeryville, CA
Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era of micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler™ technology. This full-stack technology enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. It promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing for the many device classes frustrated by semiconductor methods and to open up entirely new product classes. The Matter Compiler™ technology fully realizes the digital manufacturing dream: bits and raw materials go in, and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device - one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter CompilerTM technology - that we will be unveiling to the world soon.
Our offices are in Emeryville and Santa Clara, California.
About The Role:
We are seeking an experienced Staff Safety Engineer to develop, lead, and sustain a comprehensive safety strategy across our machines, stations, labs, and internal operations. This role ensures that safety is embedded into engineering and operational decision-making from the outset, enabling the company to move fast while protecting people, uptime, and business continuity.
The Staff Safety Engineer will own machine safety, station readiness, operational safety systems, and training, while partnering closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Operations, EHS, and Facilities. The role will also coordinate with external safety and compliance consultants when specialized expertise is required (e.g., electrical safety reviews, FCC/NRTL readiness posture) while maintaining a pragmatic, execution-focused approach.
This position is critical to scaling complex electro-mechanical systems safely across multiple U.S. sites, ensuring safety rigor grows alongside technical ambition without introducing unnecessary bureaucracy.
What You'll Do:
Lead machine and operational safety programs across labs and manufacturing
Embed safety-by-design into equipment development and station commissioning
Own station readiness and safety sign-off for new or modified equipment
Conduct and maintain hazard analyses and risk assessments
Design and enforce guarding, interlocks, E-stops, and LOTO programs
Establish an electrical safety posture aligned with OSHA/NFPA expectations
Lead incident and near-miss investigations and CAPA
Develop and deliver role-based safety training
Track and report safety metrics and risk trends
Coordinate with external safety consultants when needed
Travel between Emeryville and Santa Clara sites as required
What You'll Need:
10+ years of experience in machine safety, product safety, or industrial safety engineering
Hands-on experience with LOTO, guarding, interlocks, and risk assessments
Familiarity with ISO 12100 / ANSI B11; NFPA 70/70E exposure preferred
Proven ability to build scalable safety systems
Strong cross-functional influence and judgment
CMSE, TÜV, or equivalent certification preferred
A first-principles mindset - you question assumptions, reframe problems from the ground up, and approach challenges with a foundational understanding rather than relying solely on precedent.
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field
The compensation for this position also includes equity and benefits.
