Saint Ann's School company history timeline

1965

A school gymnasium, Neidert Hall, was built in 1965.

From its origins as a neighborhood school founded in 1965, Saint Ann’s School has evolved and grown in myriad ways.

1966

In 1966, the Church purchased the former Crescent Athletic Club House, a building designed by noted Brooklyn architect Frank Freeman, for the sum of $365,000, which has since served as the school's main building.

1969

1969 - Monsignor John Corrigan led the development of a new gymnasium and Social Hall.

1970

In the early 1970’s, a Home and School Group was formed, which, for the first time, included fathers.

1971

In 1971 a lay School Board was established, and the school had its first principal who was not a religious sister.

1972

When five of the twenty-one graduates of the Class of 1972 went to Yale, Harvard, and Princeton, it was clear that Saint Ann’s was more than an amusement park, but it has never been less.

1981

By mutual agreement of the Church Vestry and members of the Board of Governors of the School, a petition was sent to the Regents of the Education Department of the University of the State of New York for a charter for “Saint Ann’s School,” and in September of 1981, an absolute charter was granted.

1982

A preschool, located in the Alfred T. White Community Center at 26 Willow Place, was opened in 1982.

In 1982, Saint Ann's School formally disaffiliated from the church, having been granted a charter from the Board of Regents of the State of New York.

1985

In September 1985 Monsignor Thomas Hoban was installed as the third pastor and the Benedictine Sisters joined the parish community.

St Ann School was staffed primarily by the Sisters of Saint Francis from its founding through 1985.

1986

In 1986, St Ann Catholic Parent Organization (SACPO) was founded.

1993

The church had a major renovation in 1993 and the school has had major renovation projects over the last eight years.

1995

1995 – St Ann’s added more classrooms and meeting space.

1997

In 1997, parishioners, alumni and friends of St Ann donated time, money and thousands of working hours of “sweat equity” to convert the old convent into the St Ann Early Childhood Center, a wonderful preschool where parish and neighborhood children learn and play and prepare for kindergarten.

1998

In 1998 the parish added a Parish Life Center.

2001

In March of 2001, a seven-story building at 153 Pierrepont Street was purchased by the School.

2004

When Bosworth retired in 2004, Larry Weiss, formerly the head of the upper school at The Horace Mann School, American University scholar, and president at Friends World College, began his tenure as head of school at Saint Ann's.

2007

In the spring of 2007, the main building at 129 Pierrepont Street was dedicated to Stanley and named The Bosworth Building.

2008

Monsignor Hoban devotedly served the parish and school community for over 20 years until his retirement in 2008.

2010

In May 2010, Vincent J. Tompkins Jr., the Deputy Provost at Brown University, and formerly associate dean of academic affairs at Harvard University, was named Weiss's successor.

In the summer of 2010, Saint Ann’s purchased a townhouse at 229 Baltic Street to serve as the residence for the current and future heads of school and as a place for gatherings of members of the school community.
