Saint Augustine's University history

The new school opened its doors for instruction on January 13, 1868.

In 1893, the School’s name changed from Saint Augustine Normal School to Saint Augustine’s School.

In 1919, the name changed to Saint Augustine’s Junior College, the first year in which postsecondary instruction was offered.

In 1928, the institution was renamed Saint Augustine’s College.

St Augustine’s awarded its first baccalaureate degree in 1931, after being accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Johnson was admitted following an accident that ultimately led to his death in 1946.

Interestingly, Saint Augustine's did not appoint a black president until its sixth president was named in 1947: Harold L. Trigg.

Johnson was admitted following an accident that ultimately led to his death in 1946. It was the first nursing school in the state of North Carolina for African-American students, and served as the only hospital to served African Americans until 1960.

The Honorable Ralph Campbell, Jr., a 1968 graduate, was the first African American to be elected State Auditor in North Carolina.

Since he began coaching in 1976, his track and field programs have won an astounding 39 national championships.

In 1987, it became the first HBCU to have its own on-campus commercial radio and television stations, WAUG-AM750 and WAUG-TV68, Cable Channel 102.

Since 1993, Saint Augustine's College has had the lowest crime rate of any college in the Raleigh-Durham area.
