Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) was established in 1867 in Raleigh, NC by the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina.
The new school opened its doors for instruction on January 13, 1868.
The school started operation in 1868 largely due to the support of the Freedmen’s Bureau who furnished the school’s faculty.
In 1893, the School’s name changed from Saint Augustine Normal School to Saint Augustine’s School.
In 1919, the name changed to Saint Augustine’s Junior College, the first year in which postsecondary instruction was offered.
In 1928, the institution was renamed Saint Augustine’s College.
St Augustine’s awarded its first baccalaureate degree in 1931, after being accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Johnson was admitted following an accident that ultimately led to his death in 1946.
Interestingly, Saint Augustine's did not appoint a black president until its sixth president was named in 1947: Harold L. Trigg.
