Saint Francis Medical Group company history timeline

1860

In 1860, Mother Theresia Bonzel established the Sisters of St Francis in Olpe, Germany.

1875

Six of these sisters journeyed to the United States in 1875 and established several houses, including one in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

1883

In 1883, the sisters were called upon by a committee of local citizens and Bishop James O’Connor of Omaha to establish a hospital in Grand Island, Nebraska — a town that had grown to 1,900 with the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad and the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush.

1887

Working with the committee, the sisters raised funding and, in 1887, opened St Francis Hospital on Adams Street.

1899

Sometime in 1899, Ezra G. Valentine, one of the pioneer leaders of the youthful city of Breckenridge, welcomed two Franciscan Sisters, Sister Mary Francis and Sister Mary Rose, from Little Falls to his office.

11/18/1904 -First hospital charity ball was held to help raise funds for the new structure.

1905

1905: Saint Francis Hospital Company is founded by five prominent San Francisco doctors.

3/16/1905 - The building committee held the first official meeting in the new facility.

5/3/1905 - Dedication ceremony was held beginning at 9:00 a.m.

1906

1/10/1906 - Annual ball was held to raise additional funds.

1911

1911: A new 100-bed building is built at Bush & Hyde (the present Nob Hill address) and is 100 percent occupied within 10 days of opening.

1916

In 1916, when William K. Warren first arrived in Oklahoma, he was an impressionable 19-year-old.

1921

1921: A 200-bed obstetrics wing is added to accommodate the post-war baby boom.

1922

In 1922, two Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary were traveling door-to-door selling embroidered cloths.

1924

A large expansion in 1924 included six operating rooms and an obstetrics department.

--/--/1924 - A new wing was added to the building to include an auditorium, Sister's quarters, and a wing for patients.

1937

In 1937, on its 50th anniversary, St Francis Hospital was one of the best-equipped institutions in Nebraska.

1938

1938: The for-profit Saint Francis Hospital Company becomes the non-profit Saint Francis Hospital Association.

1943

--/--/1943 - Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce appointed a committee to determine a course for the future.

1944

In 1944, a forward-thinking group of citizens founded the Greater Columbus Committee, which organized the Columbus Planning Association.

2/--/1944 - The committee traveled to Little Falls to discuss with the Franciscan Sisters the building of a new hospital in Breckenridge. $25,000 was to be raised within the community for a 100-bed hospital at a cost of $400,000 when completely equipped and furnished.

Being a community project, on 5/3/1944 a community business meeting was held.

3/--/1944 - St Francis Hospital Building Association was formed and incorporated.

1946

In 1946, half a million dollars was a lot of money, especially after more than four years of war had drained the local economy.

2/2/1946 - Frank W. Jackson of St Cloud was secured as the architect.

1951

1/16/1951 - Bids opened in Little Falls for the construction of the hospital.

1952

1952: The Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Clinic and Residency Program are established.

8/1/1952 - An open house was held at Marian Hall.

1954

In 1954, St Francis Hospital opened its doors to adult patients as well.

1955

1955: A four-bed ward for burn patients opens.

1960

That dream became reality when Saint Francis Hospital opened its doors in 1960.

1967

1967: The Bothin Burn Center opens as a 10-bed acute care center.

1969

In order to meet patient care requirements, as well as the demands of a rapidly growing population in southeast Tulsa, the hospital was expanded in 1969 to 735 adult and pediatric beds and bassinets.

1972

The hospital first opened its doors in 1972 under the direction of Doctor Thomas Mowdy, a resident of the community.

1975

A major milestone occurred on December 3, 1975 - the 15th anniversary of the hospital - when the Natalie Warren Bryant Cancer Center opened its doors.

In 1975, 26.6 acres of land was purchased for a new hospital on Faidley Avenue.

1979

1979: The Center for Sports Medicine opens.

During 1979, Saint Francis Hospital launched many new services.

1984

1984: The Project '84 Campaign raises $3.5 million for major hospital renovations.

1986

1986: The Healthwise Senior Program is started.

1987

St Francis purchased Grand Island Memorial Hospital on April 1, 1987 and renamed it St Francis Memorial Health Center.

1988

Warren Clinic The first area Warren Clinic was established in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in January 1988.

1989

So in 1989, he sold St Francis, passing the reins to Doctor Christine Schmeiser (who had worked for Doctor Mowdy as a teenager) and her husband, Doctor Dick Indrieri.

That vision became Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital which opened in 1989.

1990

1990: Saint Francis becomes the first hospital in the Bay Area to perform Laser Gall Bladder Surgery.

1993

1993: Saint Francis becomes a member of Dignity Health.

1994

In 1994, St Francis began training parish nurses to provide holistic healthcare to local faith communities.

1995

The Children's Hospital at Saint Francis In 1995, The Children's Hospital at Saint Francis was established.

1996

A new Birthing Center opened in 1996 with comfortable birthing suites and groundbreaking mother/baby nursing care.

The Sisters of Charity Healthcare Operations became a founding member of Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) in 1996.

1997

In November 1997, Medical Care Associates of Tulsa (MCAT) joined Warren Clinic.

The Student Wellness Center opened in 1997 at Grand Island Senior High offering healthcare services to students.

1998

Saint Francis Hospital at Broken Arrow Saint Francis Hospital at Broken Arrow officially became part of the Saint Francis Health System in January 1998; yet, the history uniting the two began a decade earlier.

--/--/1998 -Appletree Court Senior Housing, a 20-unit housing complex was completed.

1999

In 1999, as the local medical community grew to nearly 100 physicians, St Francis undertook joint ventures with area physicians to build an ambulatory surgery center and imaging center.

1999: Dignity Health and Saint Francis become the Official Health Care Provider of the San Francisco Giants.

2000

2000: Saint Francis opens The Health Center at SBC Park (now AT&T Park).

2001

2001: Equipped with the latest technology and expertise, The Total Joint Center opens its doors.

2002

2002: Saint Francis scores 94 during the JCAHO/CALS survey, one of the top scores within the Dignity Health Hospital System.

2004

Saint Francis Heart Hospital In March 2004, the Saint Francis Health System and area cardiologists joined together as partners to open the Saint Francis Heart Hospital.

2005

In December of 2005, the physicians and staff of Springer Clinic became a part of Warren Clinic.

2005: Saint Francis Memorial Hospital celebrates its 100th birthday!

--/--/2005 -The new St Francis Healthcare Campus was built.

2006

2006: Saint Francis Memorial Hospital opens a state-of-the-art new Emergency Department and implements CareConnect, the hospital-wide paperless medical record system.

2007

In November of 2007, Saint Francis Veterinary Specialists opened its doors as an internal medicine and surgical referral practice with 12 employees.

14, 2007, by The Most Reverend William Dendinger, Bishop of the Diocese of Grand Island; Michael Rowan, chief operating officer of CHI; and community leaders from central Nebraska.

2008

2008: Saint Francis Memorial Hospital is certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission.

Saint Francis Hospital South Opened in 2008, this 96-bed community hospital serves the needs of southern Tulsa and Wagoner counties in Oklahoma.

2009

2009: Saint Francis opens the new Spine Care Institute of San Francisco.

2011

2011: Saint Francis opens nine new and most advanced operating suites in San Francisco.

2012

2012: Saint Francis begins expansion of the Bothin Burn Center from 10 to 20 beds.

In 2012 Saint Francis Health System and the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce dedicated the Saint Francis Health Park, a community park with a fitness focus where Saint Francis Hospital in Broken Arrow once stood.

2014

Saint Francis Trauma Emergency Center and Patient Tower The eight-story, 500,000-square-foot patient tower and Trauma Emergency Center (TEC) opened in early September of 2014.

2014: Saint Francis expands its Imaging Services Department with new advanced digital imaging technology with the addition of the Hologic Selenia Dimensions 2D Digital Mammography and the Toshiba Aquilion Prime Volumetric CT Scanning.

2017

Saint Francis Hospital Muskogee In April, 2017, Eastar Health System and affiliated clinics became part of Saint Francis Health System.
