He was referring to the program he had announced just months after his election, the calling of a great church council, Vatican II. No such council had been summoned since 1879, and John attributed the unexpected call to an inspiration from the Holy Spirit.
Angelo Guiseppe Roncalli began his life in 1881 as the son of farmers so poor they shared the first floor of their house in Bergamo, near Milan, with six cows.
1892: Enters the seminary at Bergamo.
1905: Begins teaching history and patristics (the lives and teachings of the church fathers) at Bergamo seminary.
After the bishop’s death in 1914, he wrote an appreciative biography of the prelate and sent a copy to the pope, Benedict XV, who had been one of Radini-Tedeschi’s personal friends.
1918: Opens a hostel for students in Bergamo.
In 1920 Pope Benedict, recalling Radini-Tedeschi’s biographer, named him a director of the Italian organization for the support of foreign missions.
1921: Is called to Rome as the head of the Italian national office of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.
Roncalli was appointed apostolic visitor to Bulgaria in March 1925.
His success in carrying out the assignment was acknowledged by the papacy when Archbishop Roncalli was named a cardinal by Pius XII. In January 1953 the red hat, the symbol of a cardinal, was conferred on him by the socialist president of France, Vincent Auriol.
1960: Presides over the Rome diocese's first synod.
1961: Issues "Mater et Magistra" ("Mother and Teacher"), an encyclical on social issues that emphasizes the obligations of nations and individuals to bring about social justice.
But the pope pushed on with his plan and lived long enough to preside over the first session of the Second Vatican Council in the fall of 1962.
1963: At the height of the Cold War, he releases his second social encyclical, "Pacem in Terris" ("Peace on Earth"), teaching that true peace must be built on the pillars of truth, justice, love and freedom.
There have been many ‘firsts’ since the College’s inception including the first Inter-Hall sporting competition taking victory over Bruce Hall in 1967.
The Dominican Brothers, founded in 1215 by St Dominic continue to have a strong presence on the College Board and until 2020 a priest living at the College.
