Saint Leo University company history timeline

1889

Saint Leo College and Saint Leo Abbey were founded on June 4, 1889.

Saint Leo University is a private, non-profit, Roman Catholic liberal arts university established in 1889 and located in Saint Leo, Florida, 35 miles north of Tampa.

1890

St Leo College, the original name of the institution, opened its doors on September 14, 1890.

Charles H. Mohr, O.S.B., was elected as the first Abbot. (In 1890, he was appointed the new college’s first director.)

1893

The first five students graduated in June 1893 with Master of Accounts degrees.

1902

The name was a reference to a series Saint Bernard dogs bearing that name, all owned by Father Charles Mohr, who served as the first abbot of Saint Leo Abbey from 1902-31.

1959

Since 1959, when the junior college was started, Saint Leo has had 10 presidents:

1967

Saint Leo College conferred its first bachelor's degree on April 23, 1967, on 51 men and 13 women.

1998

In 1998, the university's Center for Online Learning was created, allowing students to take classes online from any location.

1999

In 1999, the Saint Leo athletic teams re-adopted the Lions name.

2011

In 2011, Saint Leo University created an anthropomorphic lion mascot named Fritz.

2013

Kim Payne joined Saint Leo’s University Communications office in 2013 as the staff writer and media coordinator.

2019
