1895

1895 - Work begins on Saint Martin’s first building in January, and a four story structure housing both the school and a monastery are completed by late summer.

1903 - "A special building for lay brothers and workers," designed and built by the industrious Father Ulric, is built to the northeast of the original College building.

1906 - Father Sebastian Ruth becomes the first priest specifically ordained for Saint Martin's.

1913

Although it matched the 1913 “south wing,” the addition offered broader halls, larger rooms, and higher ceilings.

1914

1914 - Abbot Oswald Baran is elected by his fellow monks to be Saint Martin's first abbot.

1919

The school fundraised in various ways, such as the November 1919 “Buy a Brick” campaign, to raise money.

In the summer of 1919 foundations were dug for a new west wing.

1921

1921 - Father Sebastian's "hobby" radio station develops into a part-time, licensed broadcasting station and is assigned the call letters KGY.

1923

On June 20, 1923 students and staff were able to move into the new west wing.

1925

1925 - Father Sebastian inaugurates a campus yearbook, the Marian Annual.

1926

1926 - Athletic teams join a conference (Washington-Oregon Conference) for the first time.

The Saint Martin’s Mother’s Club raised money to build the 1926 Grand Staircase in front of the building.

1930

1930 - Golf course and tennis courts are built.

1934

1934 - In April, the Benedictine Monachist, edited and largely written by Father Sebastian, begins bi-monthly publication with the goal of stimulating further interest in Benedictine and religious matters.

1940

1940 - Saint Martin’s first graduates receive degrees.

1946

1946 - The first men's basketball team is established again after World War II

1947

1947 - The First Invitational collegiate track and field event is held ("Saint Martin's Relays).

1949

1949 - Saint Martin's joins the Evergreen Conference.

1959

1959 - In June, the Benedictine Sisters of Saint Gertrude's Convent in Cottonwood, Idaho withdraw from Saint Martin's culinary and sewing departments.

1965

1965 - In September, a public announcement is made that the College will enroll women in all of its programs.

1966

1966 - Saint Martin's athletic teams become the Saint Martin's Saints.The striking three-story Burton Hall residence center is erected near the popular Baran Hall, housing up to 184 students and providing an apartment for the director of residence.

1972

1972 - Saint Martin’s begins offering extension programs at nearby Fort Lewis Army Post and McChord Air Force Base.

1975

In November 1975, the bookstore was relocated to Old Main with a “[g]rand opening sale next Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday—everything but class rings reduced on those days by 10%,” according to the weekly Pipeline newsletter.

1977

Boniface Hardin, O.S.B. and Sister Jane Schilling, CSJ founded Martin University in 1977.

In 1977, Martin University was created, in the midst of the inner city barriers to academic success, to offer opportunities for ordinary and disenfranchised persons to change their destinies through education.

1979

1979 - The first official women's basketball team (Lady Saints) is formed.

1982

1982 - The Spiritual Life Institute is established under the joint sponsorship of the College and Abbey.

1983

1983 - The first annual SMAF golf tournament is held.

1985

1985 - The Saint Martin's Athletic Foundation is established "to encourage and enhance the quality" of Saint Martin's intercollegiate and intramural athletic programs.

1988

1988 - the first official volleyball team is formed.

1990

1990 - The Saint Martin's Athletic Foundation (SMAF) inaugurates a Saint Martin's Athletic Hall of Fame and begins inducting former campus sports stand-outs at the College's Homecoming celebration.

1993

Extensive renovation of Old Main began in 1993 when the roof was reconstructed.

1994

Work was accelerated after a fire on November 15, 1994 in the basement kitchen’s dishwasher room caused over a million dollars in damage.

2000

In 2000, the University began construction of its first new building, the $10 million Educational Center.

2001

The Center and the beautiful Peace Garden connects the former St Francis de Sales Catholic Church and the Doctor Andrew J. Brown Building, which opened in the summer of 2001.

2009

2009 - The University welcomes its 10th president, Roy F. Heynderickx, Ph.D, and the Charneski Recreation Center and new track and field facility opens.

Further renovation was done in 2009 when St Gertrude’s Café, the main campus dining area, was built on the first floor.

2011

2011 - The name of the street guiding guests through Saint Martin’s main entrance is changed from 6th Avenue to “Abbey Way”— part of the transformation of the north campus.

2013

November 2013 marks the centennial anniversary of the construction of the first part of the main building on the Saint Martin’s University campus, fondly nicknamed “Old Main.” Such an old building is special because so few structures of that age have survived in Thurston County.

2015

2015 - The softball regular season team wins the GNAC Championship.

2016

2016 - Construction of the Panowicz Foundry for Innovation and E.L. Wiegand Laboratories, which includes a senior project area for student capstone design, is completed.

2018

2018 - The University announces a Science Initative to build a new 30,000 square-foot building to house classrooms, labs and offices for biology, chemistry, physics and math.

2019

The men's basketball regular season team wins the GNAC Championship and makes its first regional appearance.2019 - The University opens the Father Bede Ernsdorff, Reischman, O.S.B. Department of Natural Sciences.

2020

2020 - Saint Martin's University begins its 125th anniversary celebration.
