1840

Fourteen days later on July 26, 1840, they left for Vincennes on the ship, Cincinnati.

Although much has changed since 1840, SMWC remains dedicated to empowering young women and men to emerge as strong leaders prepared for life’s opportunities.

1841

The first postulant arrived on May 1, 1841.

Saint Mary’s Female Institute (the former name of SMWC), informally known as the Academy, opened on July 4, 1841, 29 years before 4th of July became a national holiday in the United States

On October 9, 1841, the Wabash Courier (published in Terre Haute) advertised the “Convent and Academy,” headed by “Sister Theodora Guerin.” After the establishment of their first school at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, the sisters’ educational influence spread quickly throughout the state.

1842

On March 21, 1842, the Sisters of Providence opened a Girls’ Boarding School in Jasper.

Perhaps the most significant difficulty faced by the sisters was a fire that destroyed their barns and granaries on October 2, 1842, burning various provisions needed for the upcoming winter.

1843

On November 28, 1843, Mother Theodore and the sisters left France on the Nashville.

1844

Mother Theodore Guérin and the other sisters finally returned to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on April 1, 1844.

1846

In 1846, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College was granted the first charter for the higher education of women in the state of Indiana.

1853

In 1853, he opened the firm D.A. Bohlen in Indianapolis.

1854

One of his first clients was the Sisters of Providence at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, who hired him to replace the original Academy building in 1854.

1856

After 12 more years of continuous educational service with the Sisters of Providence, Mother Theodore Anne-Thérèse Guérin died on May 14, 1856.

1867

Most universities only allowed men to attend classes; Indiana University did not admit its first female student until 1867.

1882

Diederich’s son Oscar joined the firm in 1882, at 19 years of age.

1899

SMWC conferred its first bachelor of arts degree in 1899.

1907

On December 3, 1907, Mother Theodore’s remains were moved from the burial plot to a crypt.

1908

Almost a year later, on October 30, 1908, the first miracle attributed to Mother Theodore Guérin occurred.

1910

Oscar’s son August joined in 1910.

1914

In January 1914, the Reverend Alphonaus Smith and the Reverend John T. O’Hare officially initiated the rigorous process of canonization for Mother Theodore Guérin when they left for Rome with about 500 sealed typewritten pages of evidence.

1928

In 1928, the Academy was incorporated as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.

1946

By 1946, August’s son Robert became the fourth generation architect in Bohlen and Son.

1969

The Knoerle Center is the first new building on campus since Hulman Hall was built in 1969.

1973

In 1973, the College introduced one of the first independent study programs in the nation, the Women's External Degree (WED) program.

1975

In June, 1975 members of the Indiana Academy elected the late Mother Theodore Guérin into their organization.

1984

Since 1984, SMWC has offered coed graduate programs.

1990

It was purchased by Schneider Corporation in 1990.

2005

In 2005, the College expanded access to its undergraduate distance program to men.

2006

Saint Mother Theodore Guerin was canonized on October 15, 2006, by Pope Benedict XVI, and is Indiana's first saint.

2007

In 2007, the College introduced the Master of Leadership Development (MLD) program.

2008

As of 2008, her most prominent endeavor, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, continues the mission it began under Saint Theodore Guérin, to provide women with educational opportunities.

2012

In August 2012, the Indianapolis Business Journal recognized SMWC as having one of the largest online degree programs in the state.

2013

on October 18, 2013, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College launched a brand initiative focused on advancing its image and reputation.

In December 2013, it announced the new RN to BSN completion program for current registered nurses who are seeking a bachelor of science in nursing, a degree program also offered at the College.

2015

In 2015, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College announced that the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to become fully coeducational at its May 1, 2015 meeting.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, the oldest Catholic College in Indiana, expanded its mission to include men in all programs in 2015, yet continues to embrace its rich history as a women’s college.

In 2015, all programs, including the campus-based resident undergraduate degree program, were opened to both men and women.

2017

In 2017, the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Historic District, home of SMWC and the Sisters of Providence, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

More recently, in 2017, work began on the construction of a walking trail, an environmental habitat and outdoor classroom at Lake Le Fer.
