Saint Meinrad company history timeline

1861

January 21, 1861 was also the 1,000th anniversary of the death of Saint Meinrad.

In 1861, a grade school was founded for the Catholic education of the parish’s children.

Beginning with the academic year of 1861, complete commercial, classical, philosophical and theological courses were offered.

In 1861, the monks expanded their general courses to include undergraduate courses in philosophy and theology.

1901

1921

Scope and Content Note Foster Tolliver, born 1921, grew up in Posey County, Indiana, but did not move to New Harmony until after World War II. He was a local businessman and town councilman for many years before becoming mayor.

Scope and Content Note Father Rupert Ostdick, born on November 14, 1921, discusses his experiences as a Benedictine monk and priest, business manager, and treasurer at Saint Meinrad Archabbey.

1933

The move to Illinois occurred in 1933, when six Benedictine monks of the St Meinrad Abbey, as well as staff and boarding students, relocated Jasper Academy to Aurora Illinois.

1954

The statue of Our Lady of Einsiedeln with the Child Jesus was originally in the Archabbey Church, but when Saint Meinrad’s mother abbey gifted the Archabbey with a replica of the Black Madonna in 1954, the parish inherited the original statue.

1955

In 1955, Father Raban Hathorn, OSB, launched a capital campaign for the construction of the new church.

1959

By 1959, the school had restructured itself to follow the traditional high school, college, and theologate levels of progress.

In 1959, the schools were reorganized into the familiar pattern: high school, college and theologate.

1960

On March 27, 1960, Archbishop Paul Schulte of Indianapolis dedicated the new parish church.

1979

1993

The North Spencer County School Corporation leased the parish school for a number of years before it closed in 1993.

1998

She established The Reality Store in 1998 through the Business and Professional Women and established Renaissance Harrison County.

2000

In 2000, St Meinrad began a fall picnic as a significant parish gathering and reunion for those who once called St Meinrad home.

2001

They were given to the parish in 2001 from a closed mission church in the Dakotas where Benedictine monks had served for many years.

2011

In 2011, the parish celebrated the 150th anniversary of its founding.

2021
