Saint Ursula Academy company history timeline

1910

St Ursula Academy was established in 1910 by the newly founded Ursuline community as a private academy for students from kindergarten through the twelfth grade.

1915

The facilities were enhanced in 1915 with the building of a chapel wing, which connected the two original buildings and also provided enlarged kitchen and dining areas.

1940

St Ursula School opened on September 9, 1940, under the direction of Sister Rita Ursula and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

1941

In 1941, the rectory was built and the priests were able to move out of the school.

1946

In 1946, the first class graduated from St Ursula School.

1948

North and south wings were added to the original building in 1948.

1952

In 1952 two smaller houses adjacent to the west wing were purchased.

1953

In 1953, the current convent was built to house the sisters and work began on the new church at the corner of Harford Road and Putty Hill Avenue.

1959

In 1959, there were 15 sisters and 12 lay teachers.

1962

In 1962, there were 1,468 students with 17 sisters and 12 lay faculty.

1968

In 1968, an auditorium, kitchen, meeting rooms, storage rooms, and office were added to handle the increase.

1971

In 1971, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur announced their decision to withdraw from St Ursula School but continue to minister to the parish.

1985

November 1985 marked the seventy-fifth anniversary of St Ursula's foundation.

1987

In 1987, a Kindergarten program was added, and enrollment began to steadily increase.

1994

In 1994 St Ursula Academy was incorporated as a separate entity and is now governed by a Board of Trustees.

1999

In 1999 St Ursula Academy purchased the McMillan Street property from the Ursulines of Cincinnati.

2000

By the year 2000, 758 students were enrolled at St Ursula School and being taught in a Catholic Christian environment by dedicated lay faculty.

2012

In 2012, St Ursula School added 2 full-time Pre-Kindergarten classes.

2017

In April 2017, the nearby University of Cincinnati announced that its women's basketball and women's volleyball teams would play their home games in the 2017–18 school year at the St Ursula Gymnasium & Convocation Center while the teams' normal home of Fifth Third Arena undergoes renovations.
