Salem Collection company history timeline

1848

Formed in 1848, the Essex Institute was created when two other Salem organizations were merged.

1850

Asahel Bush, a publisher, banker and political leader, who was raised on the East coast, came west in 1850 and settled in Oregon City.

1853

He founded the Oregon Statesman newspaper and moved the paper and himself to Salem in 1853.

1855

In 1855, the Bertram family moved from their smaller house at 24 Winter Street and took up residence in their new High Style Italianate brick and brownstone mansion at 370 Essex Street.

1877

He and his wife Eugenia had four children and later in 1877 built the Bush House in Salem.

1889

The offer was accepted and the Salem Public Library opened its doors on July 8, 1889.

1898

Maxwell was a native of Salem where he was born in 1898.

1939

He started working with the Capital Journal newspaper in 1939.

1944

Historic Salem, Inc. is a preservation organization dating back to 1944.

1966

The primary resource at Historic Salem, Inc. are house histories, of which there are 33 binders, with research ranging from 1966 to the present day.

1967

Ben Maxwell, a noted Salem photographer and historian who died in 1967.
