Salem College company history timeline

1826

In the 1780s, Salem accepted its first enslaved African-American student; In 1826, it accepted its first Native American student, Sally Ridge.

1854

Salem State University was originally known as the Salem Normal School, welcoming its first class of “young ladies who wish to prepare themselves for teaching” on September 14, 1854.

1856

Charlotte Forten, the school’s first African American student and a graduate of the class of 1856, was the first northern African-American school teacher to journey south to teach freed slaves.

1892

1892: Slater Industrial Academy founded on September 28, 1892.

1896

Salem State remained on Broad Street until 1896

1899

1899: The school was chartered by the state as Slater Industrial Academy and Slater Normal School.

1925

1925: The school is named Winston-Salem Teachers College, the first Black institution in the nation to grant degrees for teaching in the elementary grades.

1953

1953: The School of Nursing was established, and began awarding graduates the Bachelor of Science degree.

1957

The first degrees were awarded in 1957.

1960

In 1960, Salem Teachers College became Salem State College, authorizing the institution to offer bachelor of arts degrees in a variety of liberal arts majors and a bachelor of science degree in business, in addition to the education degrees in which the institution had long specialized.

1963

1963: The North Carolina General Assembly authorized changing the name from Winston-Salem Teachers College to Winston-Salem State College.

1966

The first residence halls opened in 1966, and Salem State continued to add to its academic programming throughout the years.

1972

1972: On July 1, 1972, Winston-Salem State University became one of the 16 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina.

1989

In 1989 Salem College and the Teikyo University Foundation entered into a partnership to create an international learning center, Salem-Teikyo University.

2000

In 2000, the name of the institution was changed to Salem International University to reflect an emphasis on global learning.

2005

In June 2005, Salem Education LLC assumed control of Salem and began strengthening the university’s programs and operations, developing new programs of study, and improving the university’s facilities and infrastructure.

2010

Salem State College officially became Salem State University on October 26, 2010.

2017

In 2017, the name of the institution was changed to Salem University.
