The state granted a permit in December 1888 to build what was called the Academy of Salem, specifying that the institution was subject to the regulations and decisions of the Society of Seventh Day Baptist Education.
Since its founding in 1892, Winston-Salem State University has grown from a one-room frame structure to more than 39 buildings located on 117 acres; from one teacher to more than 400 faculty members; and from 25 pupils to a student body of more than 6,000.
In 1925, the General Assembly of North Carolina recognized the school's curriculum above high school, changed its name to Winston-Salem Teachers College and empowered it under authority of the State Board of Education to confer appropriate degrees.
The School of Nursing was established in 1953 and awards graduates the bachelor of science degree.
In 1963 the North Carolina General Assembly authorized changing the name from Winston-Salem Teachers College to Winston-Salem State College.
A statute designating Winston-Salem State College as Winston-Salem State University received legislative approval in 1969.
On October 30, 1971, the General Assembly reorganized higher education in North Carolina.
On July 1, 1972, Winston-Salem State University became one of 16 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina subject to the control of a Board of Governors.
God mandated Archbishop Sam Amaga in 1988 with a vision to raise a generation of people strong in faith, strong in wisdom and doing exploits in life.
In 1989, Salem formed an alliance with Teikyo University of Tokyo, Japan, which changed the focus of the school to one of education of international students.
The vision found expression in the establishment of Salem International Christian Center as the Proprietor of Faith Education Center and Faith International College, a nursery/primary and the secondary schools respectively, in Port-Harcourt since 12 January 1990.

In 2000, the name of the institution was changed to Salem International University to reflect an emphasis on global learning.
The alliance with Teikyo ended in 2000, when the school was purchased by investors from Singapore.
Salem International University was acquired by Salem Education LLC in June 2005.
The school was renamed Salem University in September 2017.
