Cover letters should wow your hiring managers and prove that you understand the company’s needs, that you care about the organization and your role in it, and what value you will bring to the team.

Parts of a Sales Cover Letter

There are a few different pieces to a cover letter that makes them effective. The process is relatively straightforward, as long as you know the different components necessary to make it shine.

For sales jobs, you want to really focus on the specific value you feel you can bring to the sales team and why this sales job is ideal for you. Here’s what you should consider including on a cover letter for a sales position:

  • Contact information. At the top of your cover letter, you’ll want to include your contact information just under your name. Your header should reflect your resume, so be sure it’s the same font type and size.

    For salespeople, it’s a good idea to include as many personal details as possible including a link to your LinkedIn profile.

    Make sure your link is customized and easy to remember and ensure it’s as up-to-date as possible before you send your resume. LinkedIn’s digital presence is more important now than ever, especially for sales representatives.

  • Salutation. As a salesperson, it’s incredibly important to avoid the very generic “To Whom It May Concern” salutation. Check out the company’s website, or if you’re working with a recruiter, ask them directly. This individual is typically the hiring manager, sales executive to whom you would report if you got the job, or HR director.

    Once you have their name, start your letter with, “Dear,” and their first name at the top of your letter. This will help get their attention and show that you did your homework. If you feel uncomfortable only using their first name, you can use their last name as well.

  • Cover letter opening. This is one of the most important parts of your cover letter as it sets the tone and expectation for your interview and who you are as a person. You’re looking for conversion here, and like any other sales tactic, the same rule applies. Your first line should be irresistible and immediately grab the attention of your hiring manager.

  • Cover letter body. The body of your cover letter for a sale position is an opportunity to show why the organization must hire you. It’s the place where you should attempt to motivate the hiring manager to move forward with you as their top candidate.

    Here, you’ll want to focus on why you’re perfect for the position and why the organization is perfect for you.

  • Closing. A formal closing on cover letters is best, such as “Best regards,” or “Sincerely.” Don’t use informal closings like “Ciao” or “Cheers” since your cover letter should give off your most professional voice.

  • Signature. If you are sending your cover letter through mail or handing it to the potential employer during a screening interview, it’s a great idea to add a handwritten signature as an extra touch. If you are submitting online, typing your name is acceptable.

Sales Cover Letter Opening

The opening of your cover letter is just like the opening line of your sales pitch. It should be attention-grabbing and impossible to forget. There are many ways to accomplish this in your sales cover letter and it may vary by industry, hiring manager, and company. There are two things to focus on for your opening.

  • Your unwavering enthusiasm. As a salesperson, you should be not just excited, but loyal to the company you work for. This means that even at the interview stage you should be excited about the company’s products and services that it offers.

    Not only that, but you should have some general knowledge about how it all works. Hiring managers won’t expect you to know all the ins and outs of their company, but as a salesperson they may potentially hire, they’ll want to know you have some knowledge of what they deliver to clients.

  • Your specific differentiators. You’ll likely be up for an interview against other sales candidates, so you must communicate your specific value to the hiring manager. How do you stand out against other candidates? What makes you special and how does this relate to the company’s specific offerings?

The body of your cover letter for a sales position is where you want to really shine. This is the meat of your selling strategy, where you advocate for yourself and your sales abilities and what you can bring to this specific sales team.

But it’s also an opportunity for you to showcase how much you respect the company and your overall knowledge of what they do and the products and services that they offer. You’ll want to frame this as the perfect partnership and make it near impossible for the hiring manager to deny that you’re perfect for this position. For the body, consider focusing on these two things:

  • Your specific value (with examples). Be sure you articulate the skill sets that you think the organization and hiring manager will find valuable, but even more importantly, include specific examples.

    Sales live by numbers, so if you haven’t already, be sure you come with hard statistics that prove how much your individual contributions have brought financial value to your previous positions.

  • Why the job is a perfect fit. Next, focus on why the company you’re applying with is perfect for you. The hiring managers want to understand why you’re genuinely interested in this position and what’s really in it for you. This all ties back to salespeople being loyal and truly advocating for both the products and services and the company.

Sales Cover Letter Closing Lines

After making your very appealing case, you’ll want to make sure you close on a high. Finish with a simple closing sentiment such as “Best regards” or “Sincerely,” followed by your name. You can also consider adding a line just before your closing sentiment that can stand out as a call to action.

This can be anything from “Looking forward to discussing this opportunity in further detail,” or an invitation to coffee to discuss your impressive sales results in more detail. Whatever you choose, be sure you can follow through on your promise.

Additionally, be sure to point them in the direction of your resume next, so that they can look over additional qualifications or statistics if need be.
