Salisbury School company history timeline

1925

Under the supervision of its first president, former Salisbury High School principal Doctor William J. Holloway, the new State Normal School opened its doors on September 7, 1925, with 105 students.

Since those first 105 students attended their first class in the campus’ lone building in 1925, SU has grown vastly in size, stature and reputation.

1942

His untimely death in 1942 ended the burgeoning career of a charismatic and dedicated Headmaster.

1965

Langdon’s retirement in 1965, further enhancement continued under his successor, The Reverend Edwin M. Ward.

1966

With the campus’ new name, the mascot also received an upgrade, borrowing the last letter in “SSC” to become the “Sea Gulls.” In 1966, it was personified by a caricature of a muscular seagull.

1972

After two years in rented space, the school built its own building in 1972 on 18.5 acres on Hobbs Road.

1973

The school held steady for seven years then decided to add first grade in 1973, changing its name to The Christian School of Salisbury.

1977

By 1977, The Christian School of Salisbury had grown to serving students through 7th grade.

1979

When the school’s first building – now known as Founders Hall – opened in 1979, the school had an enrollment of 97 students.

1981

Ward’s departure in 1981, The Reverend Peter W. Sipple of Oregon Episcopal School was appointed Salisbury’s fifth Headmaster in its eighty-year history.

1988

With these new schools, SSC became more than just a college, and the name was changed once again to Salisbury State University in 1988.

A proud member of the University System of Maryland since 1988, SU has continued to expand its academic offerings, as well as its physical footprint.

Richard T. Flood, Jr., Dean of the School at Noble and Greenough in Boston, MA, was appointed Salisbury’s sixth headmaster in 1988.

1996

Growing each year as classes advanced, the school served students up to 8th grade until committed parents and administration decided to expand the school to include an upper school in 1996.

1999

In 1999, Salisbury Christian School hosted its first graduating class!

2000

During the 2000-01 school year, plans were approved for the Nehemiah Building Project.

2001

The unique domed building, also designed by Hardy, Holzman and Pfeiffer, celebrated its first 12th-grade graduating class in the spring of 2001.

2003

Chandler became the seventh headmaster in July of 2003.

God repeatedly provided for this project, with supplies secured at $250,000 less than predicted! In 2003, the Nehemiah Building officially opened and all of the SCS student body could finally be educated on one campus!

2013

Gifts financed a wide variety of projects and programs including seven endowed scholarships, four teaching fellowships, ten endowed funds, the renovation and restoration of our Main Building, turf field stadium seating and the Class of 2013 Global Classroom and Video Conferencing Center.
