1964

1964: Sally store is established in New Orleans.

Sally Beauty Supply began operations as a single store in New Orleans in 1964.

Sally Beauty Holdings, Inc. opened its first store in New Orleans in 1964.

1969

Lavin was traveling in New Orleans in 1969 when he was intrigued by Sally Beauty.

In 1969, consumer products company, Alberto-Culver, purchased what has grown to become an 11-store operation at Sally Beauty.

1972

In 1972, Alberto-Culver gave management of the division to Michael Renzulli, a trained pharmacist.

1982

In 1982, Sally purchased Gibson Beauty Supply, based in Denton, Texas.

1984

In 1984, it bought an 88-store chain, Beauty Fair USA, which turned out to be a real money-loser.

1985

In 1985, Sally bought two beauty supply chains near its parent's headquarters in Illinois.

1986

By 1986, chainwide sales had reached $135 million.

1987

Though at first the stores focused on hair care items, by 1987 Sally was selling cosmetics and skin care products as well.

In 1987, Sally began to test the waters overseas, again expanding through strategic acquisitions.

1990

Coast-to-coast coverage took a little longer than that--Sally stores were found in 46 states by 1990.

1992

In 1992, the company bought most of the assets of its only large competitor, the 174-store chain Milo Beauty & Barber Supply.

1994

In 1994, the company made its second foray abroad, forming a joint operating agreement with a small beauty supply chain in Japan.

1995

In 1995, it spent over $1 million on advertising.

1996

In 1996, it purchased a chain of six stores called Friseurland-Kosmetik Gmbh.

Beginning in 1996, Sally bought three midwestern chains which sold only to salon owners.

1997

By 1997, chainwide sales had reached $880 million, which was half of parent Alberto-Culver's revenue.

Through acquisition and opening new stores, Sally Beauty had more than 1,800 retail outlets by 1997.

2001

In 2001, the Beauty Systems Group bought a competitor called Armstrong-McCall.

By 2001, the Sally Beauty chain had grown to 1,900 stores in the United States.

2004

Sally continues its ongoing support of breast cancer research at City of Hope and presented a check for $100,000 at the annual gala event in Las Vegas in 2004 bringing the total Sally Beauty has raised to more than 3 million.

2005

Gary Winterhalter is promoted to President of Sally Beauty Company from President of Sally Beauty North America in May of 2005.

Since establishing the Sally Beauty Anniversary Fund in 2005, Sally Beauty has provided over $150,000 in funds to support domestic abuse shelters across the country.

Also in 2005, Beauty Systems Group entered the Los Angeles and Hawaiian marketplace to expand into the Western United States through the acquisition of 93 CosmoProf stores.

2006

In June 2006, Beauty Systems Group (BSG) acquired U.K. based Salon Success (www.salon-success.co.uk ). Salon Success is the sole U.K. distributor of Paul Mitchell Luxury Hair Care products.

On November 16, 2006 Sally Beauty Holdings becomes an independent public company and Gary Winterhalter is named President and CEO.

2007

In February 2007, Sally Beauty Holdings acquired Salon Services based in the UK providing a strong European presence for the Company.

2008

In May 2008, Sally Beauty Holdings acquired Pro-Duo, a European distributor of professional beauty products.

2009

On January 30, 2009, the first Sally Beauty in Alaska opened in Wasilla.

Also in 2009, Beauty Systems Group (BSG) acquired Schoeneman Beauty Supply, Inc., a leading full-service distributor of professional beauty products.

2010

The 4,000th store for Sally Beauty Holdings is a Sally Beauty Supply store that opened in Charlotte, North Carolina on July 19, 2010.

In October 2010, Beauty Systems Group acquired Aerial Company, Inc., a leading distributor in the professional beauty products industry with 82 stores and 70 direct sales consultants in the Midwest region of the United States

2014

Sally Beauty Supply expanded its presence to Peru on January 28, 2014.

2022

By 2022, the global cosmetics market (including hair) is projected to reach $430 billion.
