Heavy Equipment Operator (Landfill)
Operates a variety of heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner, while utilizing best and accepted operating methods to process incoming non-hazardous municipal solid waste.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Be able to assist in placement, covering, and compaction of trash.
Operate compactor, dozer, scraper, motor grader, loader, and water truck in a proficient manner.
Operate each piece of equipment with safety as the first priority.
Inspect assigned equipment and prepare pre and post-trips as required.
Assist with maintenance and construction of landfill roads.
Maintain required slope levels, deck levels and tipping area.
Comply with all safety procedures, and aware of emergency contracts.
Perform any other duties assigned by the Lead HEO and Landfill Site Manager.
KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Must be able to read and understand safety rules, operating manuals and procedures manuals.
Must have a valid California driver's license, Class B license is a plus.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of 1-year experience operating heavy equipment in dirt or trash, required.
All candidates, which include internal employees or external applicants, must successfully complete an on-site operating skills test on all landfill site equipment and must demonstrate proficiency on all equipment types while exhibiting safe tipping table management, waste fill construction, waste slope shaping and grading, efficient waste compaction and cover soil application on a variety of slope configurations.
Must be able to communicate effectively and follow directions.
HAZWOPER training not required but is preferred.
PHYSICAL:
This position requires that the individual walk on level and slippery surfaces, sit, stand, crouch, reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, climb and lift objects up to 50 pounds.
Requires grasping and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties.
Requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment.
Requires independent body mobility to stand and climb into different pieces of heavy equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must be able to work effectively outdoors and under extreme seasonal weather conditions, including heat, rain and wind.
Will be working in and around non-hazardous solid waste, food waste compost, WWTP biosolids and may be exposed to airborne dust, sharp objects and noisy equipment.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT:

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under supervision of the Store Manager, manages the Non-Perishable Food and Merchandise Operations. Assists the Store Manager with efficient and effective inventory management, appealing and profitable merchandise presentation and quality customer service. Assists the Store Manager in ensuring a safe working environment and provides protection for company assets according to required procedures. Assists the Store Manager in ensuring staff and store compliance with all applicable food handling rules and regulations.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Follow company work processes to receive, open and unpack boxes, cartons and totes of merchandise.
* Stock merchandise, rotate and face merchandise on shelves, and build merchandise displays.
* Restock returned and recovered merchandise.
* Open the store a minimum of one day per week; close the store a minimum of one day per week.
* Authorize and sign for refunds and overrides; count register; drive to bank and deposit money in bank.
* Assist in ensuring the financial integrity of the store through strict cashier accountability, key control and adherence to company security practices and cash control procedures.
* Assist with management of the store in the Store Manager's absence.
* Assist the Store Manager, as directed, with scheduling employees; enter payroll information into computer.
* As directed by the Store Manager, order drop-shipments.
* Assist the Store Manager with ordering; follow prescribed ordering practices to ensure the meeting or exceeding of in-stock targets; review ordering plan, seasonal direction, and inventory management issues on a weekly basis.
* Assist with the efficient staging, stocking and storage of merchandise.
* Ensure that merchandise is presented according to established practices and Store Manager direction; utilize merchandise fixtures properly including presentation, product pricing and signage.
* Assist in plan-o-gram implementation and maintenance.
* Assist in maintaining accurate inventory levels by controlling damages, markdowns, scanning, paperwork, and facility controls.
* Conduct safety meetings in absence of the Store Manager; help to maintain a clean, well-organized store and facilitate a safe and secure working and shopping environment.
* Provide superior customer service leadership.
* Comply with company policies and procedures; assist the Store Manager in ensuring employee compliance.
* Assist Store Manager, as directed, in completing all paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
* Operate cash register and scanner to itemize and total customer's purchase; bag merchandise.
* Assist the Store Manager to ensure the execution of the stores 7 Day Workflow Plan as it relates to stocking standards and (Find -Fill - Fix) procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONS and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
* Frequent walking and standing.
* Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling and reaching to run check out station and stock merchandise.
* Frequent handling of merchandise and equipment such as hand-held scanner, pricing guns, box cutters, merchandise containers, two-wheel dollies, rolltainers (four-wheel rolling merchandise carts) and U-boats (six-wheel carts).
* Frequent and proper lifting of up to 40 pounds; occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds. Occasional climbing using ladder.
* Regularly driving/providing own transportation to make bank deposits, attend meetings and travel to other Dollar General stores.
* Fast-paced environment; moderate noise level.
* Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
* May be exposed to extreme cold in freezers.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
* Ability to read and interpret operating statements and identify corrective actions to negative trends, if needed.
* Knowledge of cash, facility and safety control policies and practices (deposits, store keys, SAFE program, etc.)
* Ability to read and interpret documents such as diagrams, health regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
* Ability to perform cash register functions to generate reports.
* Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling and termination practices in compliance with applicable law and company requirements.
* Knowledge of all local and state food handling certifications and requirements.

* Three years of retail store experience preferred. Experience to include at least one to two years as a Department Head/Assistant Manager, or similar position in a retail grocery store or equivalent type operation or a current DG key carrier position with similar experience.

The County of Riverside seeks candidates to fill positions throughout Riverside County. A list of eligible candidates will be established to fill current and future vacancies . The Transportation Department has an opportunity for a Truck and Trailer Driver in Thermal . The selected candidates will skillfully drive/operate heavy trucks in combination with a hydraulic-operated dump trailer to haul a load capacity of approximately 25 tons of asphalt, gravel, and other road-related construction materials. Additionally, the Truck and Trailer Driver will perform manual labor in support of the road construction and road maintenance tasks as needed. Competitive candidates will have experience driving a three-axle dump truck connected by a rigid tow bar to a hydraulically operated dump trailer and have knowledge of diesel-powered engine service techniques.
The Truck and Trailer Driver is a journey level classification and reports to an appropriate supervisory or manager level position. Incumbents perform a full range of duties requiring a greater technical knowledge with little supervision or guidance. Incumbents operate dump truck/dump trailer combinations for the road construction and landfill crews. Incumbents may be driving a three axle dump truck connected by a rigid tow bar to a hydraulically-operated dump trailer, carrying an average load weighing approximately 25 tons.
The Truck and Trailer Driver is distinguished from the Equipment Operator I classification in that the former operates larger size equipment and has additional responsibilities generated by the equipment size.

The Transportation Department s responsible for planning, designing, funding, building, operating and maintaining all roads, bridges, and transportation facilities within the unincorporated County territory.• Drive heavy truck and trailer equipment hauling gravel, dirt, and rock between source of supply and various work sites.
• Operate loaders, forklifts and other light motorized equipment.
• Transport material to recycling and disposal facilities.
• Load and unload assigned materials, limiting the load to a safe and legal capacity.
• Connect and disconnect trailer as required; maintain truck and trailer in clean and serviceable condition.
• Change tires and make other emergency adjustments to the truck and motor.
• Report defects in equipment to supervisor; maintain records and reports as required. Experience: One year in the operation of a heavy dump truck (three-axle/13-ton load capacity), including some experience in the operation of heavy dump truck/dump trailer combination.
License : Possession of a valid Commercial Class A California/out-of-state Driver's License without any restrictions at time of application.
Physical Requirements: The Truck and Trailer Driver works outdoors and is exposed to inclement weather. The selected candidate will be responsible for loading equipment, building materials, and traffic control materials onto the truck. The position requires independent mobility, including the ability to stand, climb, reach, and move heavy equipment or mechanical parts. The incumbent must be able to stand for extended periods, navigate uneven or wet terrain, and perform the physically demanding tasks associated with operating and maintaining heavy equipment.
This position has been designated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) as safety-sensitive, applicants are required to complete a DOT mandated alcohol and drug-screening. (A positive test or refusal to test during the past two years will disqualify an applicant from consideration for County employment). Reference checks from former DOT regulated employers are also required.
Employees in safety-sensitive positions are subject to DOT alcohol/drug testing in the following situations: random, reasonable suspicion/cause, return-to-duty, and post-accident.
