In 1884 the United States organization sought to establish its independence of General Booth.
In 1890 General Booth published In Darkest England, and the Way Out, in which he had the assistance of William Thomas Stead.
In 1896 Ballington Booth, another son of the general and national commander in the United States, resigned after a dispute and set up the Volunteers of America.
First Australian narrative film on social work, entitled Social Salvation; Contingents from Australia disembarked on 26th November 1899 at Cape Town being the first of the Empire's Colonies to respond to the call of 'Mother England' and have troops in South Africa.
Though General Booth died in 1912, he laid a firm foundation for the lifesaving work that The Salvation Army continues to perform today in over 100 countries.
With an inherent passion for protecting the persecuted, he eventually traded in his drinking and smoking habits for a life as a Christian, where he went on to serve as a spirited captain in The Salvation Army until 1925.
The Salvation Army Medical Fellowship, and the SA Nurses Fellowship (until 1987), commence.
