Supports GPA department functions and staff by performing actuarial analyses and calculations, preparing reports, participating in meetings, and participating in various actuarial projects.
Essential Job Functions:
Support TMHD actuarial governance procedures for insurance liabilities. This could include assisting in the preparation of TM Group actuarial policies, reviewing governance-related submissions from individual group companies, and performing research on governance best practices and procedures.
Gather, prepare, and reconcile data for actuarial loss reserve reviews of individual group companies. Perform the first draft of the actuarial loss reserve reviews, including method selections, assumption selections, and final reserve estimate selections. These steps would be performed under the direction of one of the managers of the GPA department.
Assist in research to support the actuarial loss reserve process reviews performed on individual group companies by the GPA department, including recommending best practice improvements.
Support projects being performed by the International Actuarial Reserve Committee (IRAC) or those assigned to the GPA department. This could include TM Group reserve-related dashboard compilations, Reserving Modernization projects, and industry research and reporting.
Contribute to reviews of group-wide financial reporting for premium reserves and insurance liabilities for IFRS17 and ICS accounting standards.
Support projects undertaken by the GPA department actuarial modernization lead.
Qualifications:
2+ years' prior property/casualty actuarial experience.
3+ actuarial exams completed.
Understanding of statistical methods and actuarial tools and techniques.
Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving actuarial, operational or process problems.
Ability to understand solutions that resolve problems in the best interest of the business.
Analytical and reasoning skills with the capability to determine the root cause of actuarial problems.
Ability to process actuarial-related information with high levels of accuracy.
Bachelor's degree with a concentration in math, finance or economics preferred.
Ability to work effectively as part of a global team.
Proficient in one or more coding language(s), e.g., R and/or Python.
Demonstrates curiosity and a problem-solving mindset.
Future-focused with an interest in application of AI.
This is a hybrid role with an expectation to be in the NYC office location 2-3 days a week, rest from home.

The Actuarial Intern performs data analysis and conversion to support projects for the Actuarial Team Surplus & Specialty division within Crum & Forster. Works under close supervision and direction of Actuaries.
What you will do:
Preparation and analysis of actuarial data.
Automating and migrating current SQL processes to a new environment.
Researching ISO rating manuals and preparing rating specifications for rating service development.
Collaborate with other departments to gather and analyze data.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.

Interns will work directly with a mentor in their field of study while finding solutions to real world problems. Intern may also work with members of leadership and fellow interns within an interactive Agile framework that includes daily stand-ups and weekly tactical problem-solving sessions
Interns will also have exposure to join meetings within their respective functions to help further contextualize their work.
Over the course of the summer, interns will ultimately build a minimum viable product (MVP) and have a “capstone” opportunity to present those findings to the Mercury leadership team. Internships will begin in June 2026.

Education
Be legally eligible to work in the U.S
Pursuing a Bachelors (BS/BA) or Masters (MS/MA) degree in a scientific/quantitative field
Able to provide current GPA, as reported by your school. Minimum 3.0 GPA required, 3.5 or higher preferred.
Ability to work 40 hours a week, 12-week internship, beginning in June 2025.
Enrolled student attending a university program with an expected graduation date on or after August 2024

Overview

Writes actuarial memorandums and certifications required for filing new products, valuation and reserve adequacy, and answers questions from state insurance departments.
Acquires an in-depth understanding about the topic to which a particular project relates, in order to apply appropriate methods and analysis to this and future projects, while meeting the current project deadline.
Documents projects in writing in accordance with established guidelines.
Complies with standards declared by the Actuarial Standards Board and other applicable bodies (SEC, Accounting Standards Board, etc.) as well as the requirements of state and federal regulation.

Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree In mathematics or related field. (Required)
Proven mastery of responsibilities and competencies of the Assistant Actuary position.
Demonstrated creativity, judgment, decisiveness, problem-solving skills and time management skills. Proven examples from work experience on identifying complex problems, quantifying the problem and providing creative resolutions to solve.
Proven examples of working under multiple deadlines with minimal supervision. Must cite examples of successfully organizing and effectively completing projects where given little or no direction.
Expert in spreadsheet, database and mainframe applications.
Proficient in word processing.
Proficient in actuarial software packages such as those used for valuation (ARCVAL), experience studies (ARCBase), and pricing and projections (MG-ALFA).
Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). Upon Hire (Required)

Actively pursuing FSA or other insurance industry designation (FLMI, CLU, etc.). Upon Hire (Required)
Work Setting/Position Demands:
Works in an office setting and remains in a stationary position for long periods of time while working at a desk, on a computer or with other standard office equipment, or while in meetings.
Requires the ability to verbally communicate and exchange accurate information to customers and associates on a regular basis.
Requires visual acuity to read and interpret a variety of correspondence, procedures, reports and forms via paper and electronic documents, visual inspection involving small defects; small parts, and/or operation of machinery (including inspection); using measurement devices continuously. Visual acuity is required to determine accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.
Requires the ability to prepare written correspondence, reports and forms using prescribed formats and conforming to rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style on a regular basis.
Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Performs substantial movement of wrists, hands, and fingers for continuous computer work.
