Medical laboratory scientist job at Sampson Regional Medical Center
The selected candidate will obtains specimens from patients, utilizing appropriate techniques and maintain integrity of specimen according to established procedures, (blood, urine, feces, nasal swabs, and microbiological specimens). The individual will submit specimens to reference lab and maintains reference lab system and files. They will provide care to patients of all age categories while maintaining confidentiality. The selected candidate will help with CLIA waived testing and Moderate complexity testing after appropriate training and competency assessment.
Requirements:
* High school diploma or equivalent
* Phlebotomy training program preferred.
* Computer skills and knowledge of Medical Terminology is desirable.
* On-the-job training and experience of up to 3-4 weeks is provided to become familiar with departmental policies, procedures, and equipment unique to the facility. Orientation is completed for each task prior to performing tests independently.

Job Summary and Qualifications
Role Summary: The Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist assists the Laboratory Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the laboratory programs and activities consistent with Department Leadership direction; provides technical guidance to all laboratory positions and is expected to function as a bench MLS performing both routine and complex laboratory analysis and/or identification procedures on blood, tissue, and body fluids without direct supervision. Assists in monitoring quality control data to insure that results or procedures are accurate and precise and as needed performs administrate functions in the absence of the Laboratory Manager.
What qualifications you will need:
Required Educations: Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or other life sciences from an accredited college.
Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences from an accredited college.
Required Certification: ASCP Certification or equivalent certification by a nationally recognized board/agency as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. If not certified at time of hire, must be registry eligible and become certified by ASCP (or equivalent nationally recognized board/agency) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist. Must maintain certification status if required by certifying agency.
Preferred Certification: Certification by ASCP (or equivalent certification by a nationally recognized board/agency) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)
Preferred Experience: One year post graduate Laboratory experience.

Training must ensure that the individual has:
The skills required for proper specimen collection, including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation.
The skills required for implementing all standard laboratory procedures.
The skills required for performing each test method and for proper instruments use.
The skills required for performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration procedures related to each test performed.
A working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.
The skills required to implement the quality control policies and procedures of the laboratory.
An awareness of the factors that influence test results.
Clinical Laboratory Scientist (NCA, ASMT) or Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Medical Technologist (AMT, HEW) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT, ASCP, AMT) or Equivalent certification with educational requirement described in the Federal Register for supervising high complexity testing.
If the Chief Technologist does not qualify as a director, technical supervisor, or is a doctor of medicine, the individual functioning as a general supervisor must meet the following requirements for education and experience:
Have earned a doctoral, master's, or bachelor's degree in chemical physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical terminology from an accredited institution and have at least one year laboratory training or experience or both in high complexity testing, or
Have earned an associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory from an accredited institution, have at least 2 years laboratory training or experience, or both
Have education and training equivalent to(A) At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either- 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 semester hours of science courses that include-(i) Six semester hours of chemistry;(ii) Six semester hours of biology; and(iii) Twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; and
(B) Have laboratory training that includes either of the following: (1) Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS. (This training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed in paragraph (b)(2)(ii)(A) of this section. (2) At least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
CPR certification (or eligible for certification within the first 12 months of employment).
Eligible for MLT certification within the first 12 months of employment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training, or experience, and technical abilities. Tests performed in the following areas: Hematology/Coagulation (45%), Urinalysis (10%), Chemistry (30%), Blood Bank (5%), Serology (1%), Body Fluids (
Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Communicates with customer service for any instrument that needs trouble shooting problems and can document findings and schedule service.
Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performance.
Demonstrates the capability to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems immediately or notify the lab manager, lab assistant manager or pathologist.
Documents all corrective action when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Immediately recognizes and reports critical test results, realizing any particulars normals related to age. Documents reports and critical values “called to” on report in Meditech 95%.
Can accurately and efficiently carry out all responsibilities described for the phlebotomist. Phlebotomy is the responsibility of the Medical Laboratory Technician when the regular phlebotomist is unable to obtain blood or if the Phlebotomist is not present or needs assistance.
Reviews annually all laboratory policy and procedure manuals for revisions and updates. Must sign procedure manual annually showing review.
Complies with the hospital-wide and lab specific policies on Infection Control and safety regulations.
Performs any and/or all maintenance on instruments according to the manufacturer's schedule and instructions and/or according to laboratory policy.
Ensure the security of the departmental information at the end of each workday to protect confidential information.
Demonstrates a willingness to learn new procedures or process by meeting goals from previous evaluation.
Can demonstrate multitasking by planning, processing and/or prioritizing workload with accuracy with limited overtime.
Must be willing to receive all required vaccinations (i.e., flu shot, etc.).

Training must ensure that the individual has:
The skills required for proper specimen collection, including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation.
The skills required for implementing all standard laboratory procedures.
The skills required for performing each test method and for proper instruments use.
The skills required for performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration procedures related to each test performed.
A working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.
The skills required to implement the quality control policies and procedures of the laboratory.
An awareness of the factors that influence test results.
Clinical Laboratory Scientist (NCA, ASMT) or Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Medical Technologist (AMT, HEW) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT, ASCP, AMT) or Equivalent certification with educational requirement described in the Federal Register for supervising high complexity testing.
If the Chief Technologist does not qualify as a director, technical supervisor, or is a doctor of medicine, the individual functioning as a general supervisor must meet the following requirements for education and experience:
Have earned a doctoral, master's, or bachelor's degree in chemical physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical terminology from an accredited institution and have at least one year laboratory training or experience or both in high complexity testing, or
Have earned an associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory from an accredited institution, have at least 2 years laboratory training or experience, or both
Have education and training equivalent to(A) At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, include either- 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 semester hours of science courses that include-(i) Six semester hours of chemistry;(ii) Six semester hours of biology; and(iii) Twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; and (B) Have laboratory training that includes either of the following: (1) Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS. (This training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed in paragraph (b)(2)(ii)(A) of this section. (2) At least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
CPR certification (or eligible for certification within the first 12 months of employment).
Eligible for MLT certification within the first 12 months of employment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training, or experience, and technical abilities. Tests performed in the following areas: Hematology/Coagulation (45%), Urinalysis (10%), Chemistry (30%), Blood Bank (5%), Serology (1%), Body Fluids (
Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Communicates with customer service for any instrument that needs trouble shooting problems and can document findings and schedule service.
Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performance.
Demonstrates the capability to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems immediately or notify the lab manager, lab assistant manager or pathologist.
Documents all corrective action when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Immediately recognizes and reports critical test results, realizing any particulars normals related to age. Documents reports and critical values “called to” on report in Meditech 95%.
Can accurately and efficiently carry out all responsibilities described for the phlebotomist. Phlebotomy is the responsibility of Medical Laboratory Technician when the regular phlebotomist is unable to obtain blood if the Phlebotomist is not present or needs assistance.
Reviews annually all laboratory policy and procedure manuals for revisions and updates. Must sign procedure manual annually showing review.
Complies with the hospital-wide and lab specific policies on Infection Control and safety regulations.
Performs any and/or all maintenance on instruments according to the manufacturer's schedule and instructions and/or according to laboratory policy.
Ensure the security of the departmental information at the end of each workday to protect confidential information.
Demonstrates a willingness to learn new procedures or process by meeting goals from previous evaluation.
Can demonstrate multitasking by planning, processing and/or prioritizing workload with accuracy with limited overtime.
Must be willing to receive all required vaccinations (i.e., flu shot, etc.).

Essential Functions

Physical Requirements
Works in a fast-paced clinical environment. Works in an area which contains bio hazardous (infectious) materials along with chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards. Duties may involve standing, walking, stretching, stooping, bending and lifting light (20 pound) to moderately heavy (50 pound) loads.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Must have an associate degree or equivalent education and training as defined by CLIA.MLT registry eligible or equivalent required. MLT (ASCP/AMT) or equivalent required within one year of hire.MLT (ASCP/AMT) certification through the U.S military medical laboratory training programs by an accredited institution is acceptable.

About the Job The Molecular Technologist I performs procedures in a complex patient sample testing process with limited supervision. Most prominently, the position is responsible for solution and reagent preparation, equipment maintenance, and the handling and testing of patient specimens. The incumbent works one of three established shifts and may be assigned to work any day that the lab is operational.
This is a regulated position and additional information may be available from QA on the qualifications for this role pertaining to regulatory guidelines.
Regular onsite work at a designated Foundation Medicine location is an essential function of this role.
Key Responsibilities
* Prepare the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) library.
* Under limited supervision of senior lab personnel and in adherence to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs):
* Extract and isolate nucleic acids.
* Complete hybridization capture, and genetic sequencing methods.
* Operate automated 8-span and 96-head liquid handling platforms.
* Operate quantification, sizing, and NGS instruments.
* Perform any other patient and client sample testing and processing steps needed.
* Perform workflow that maintains quality, thoroughness, and optimum efficiency for Turn Around Time (TAT).
* Utilize the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to track and execute sample processing.
* Document executed process steps per Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
* Update and maintain records and data on test results per GDP.
* Perform daily, weekly, monthly and as needed equipment maintenance checks.
* Participate in additional continuous quality improvement activities.
* Adhere to safety protocols, such as wearing laboratory coats and required safety gear.
* Maintain organization and cleanliness in the labs.
* Collaborate on SOPs revisions and drafts as needed to adjust for process improvement initiatives and regulatory changes.
* Review SOPs at set intervals and sign-off to document knowledge of these procedures.
* Document and assist with investigations for non-compliance events via Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), Corrective Action/Preventative Action (CAPAs) and other reports.
* Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Basic Qualifications:
* Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or life science (per NYSDOH regulatory requirements)
* 1+ years of molecular laboratory work experience in a CAP/CLIA regulated lab
* Certifications or licensure that is required by the state or county in which the job is posted
Preferred Qualifications:
* Molecular Biology American Society of Clinical Pathology (MB-ASCP) Certification
* Quality System Regulations (QSR) compliant laboratory experience
* Familiarity of and experience working with DNA manipulation techniques, enzymatic reactions, and sequencing chemistry
* Familiarity with high throughput platforms and common molecular laboratory equipment (such as pipettes, thermocyclers, and liquid handlers)

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Morrisville, NC is $54,800 - $68,500 per year. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for Foundation Medicine's benefits.
