The history of the SJCOE stretches back to 1852, when the California Legislature created the office of the county superintendent of schools for the state’s original 27 counties, which included San Joaquin County.
S.A. Hurlburt became San Joaquin County’s first superintendent in 1853.
San Joaquin County Superintendent of Schools James A. Mousalimas is the 26th person to hold that office in the SJCOE’s 166-year history. It was 1853, the year after the state Legislature created offices of education in each of the state’s original 27 counties.
Founded in 1921, National Council for the Social Studies has grown to be the largest association in the country devoted solely to social studies education.
James Mousalimas became the 26th San Joaquin County Superintendent of Schools after he was elected to the office in 2014.
In 2015, San Joaquin County Probation started the Passport Program as part of its Day Reporting Center (DRC) redesign with SB 678 funding.
The first graduating class in 2015 consisted of 25 people, who all had positive feedback about the program.
