San Jose Museum of Art company history timeline

1969

In 1969—during an era of peace, love, and tie-dye culture—a small group of San Jose citizens gathered together to transform the beautiful old library (threatened with demolition) into a fledgling art gallery.

Founded in 1969 by a group of artists, the art museum was first known as the Civic Art Gallery.

1974

In 1974, it was renamed the San Jose Museum of Art.

1991

In 1991, a handsome new wing was added to the landmark 19th-century building, making way for a growing permanent art collection, impressive international exhibitions, and an ambitious mission that bridges tradition and innovation.

1994

The museum established a partnership with the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1994.

1997

By 1997, the museum had acquired a collection of approximately one thousand pieces of contemporary art, mostly works on paper.

2017

Krane was succeeded by Susan Sayre Batton as executive director in April 2017.

2019

By 2019, after 50 years of operation, the SJMA had acquired a permanent collection with 2,600 objects.
